Good News

---Sasha---

My alarm went off, telling me that it was time to close.

I hurried to tidy up the library. Because today, after ten years, we three childhood friends were finally going to get together. I was closing the library when I heard someone talking to me.

-Are you ready to go, Miss? - Said Alex while he hugged me.

-Of course, I did. How did your work thing go? - I said as I hugged back.

-All right, I will give you good news today. - Said with a big smile.

-Looks like it's going to be a long night. - I put on my jacket and watched as Ashley came running over.

-Have you been waiting for me long? - Ashley shouted as he grabbed our arms and pulled us towards his car.

-No, I just got here, and Sasha was closing the library. -

-Ash, let's go and eat at the usual place. Our friend has just arrived. He must tell us everything he has done over the years.- I suggested climbing into the car. Ashley started the car, and when he went a bit further, she looked at us sideways.

-Did you see the car behind us? I felt they were watching us. - She looked through the rearview mirrors.

-Haha, I don't think anyone would be interested in us. -I said as I laughed nervously and wondered if I was the bad guy from that time. Seeing me uneasy, Ashley changed the subject.

When we arrived at the usual restaurant, we went to our table and ordered. Once we had finished eating, Alex told us how he had become a somewhat famous architect. He had been working in a company in the next town where he had started dating someone. We congratulated him and were a bit upset to learn that he was in a relationship. Ashley told him about her new job and her life. When they finished their stories, they looked at me with great expectations waiting for me to share some good news as well.

-Well. I got a contract with the company ZYC. I'm going to publish a new book, I'm going to meet them in person, but they will protect my identity.- I said as I smiled and saw their happy faces.

-That's fantastic, Cherry. You deserve this and even more.- Ashley said as she hugged me tightly.

-I'm proud of you, but why are you hiding your identity? - He said as he looked at me with a curious face.

-Mmm. Well, you know. After my mother died, I lived with Ashley and her mother for a while. The reason for that is that... We suspect that it wasn't... an accident that happened to my mum. -

I saw Alex's surprised face. He looked at me for a while in silence until he turned to see if Ashley confirmed what I had said. My friend nodded and motioned for me to tell him everything.

I took a deep breath and told him everything that had happened. After all this time, I was recounting the worst day of my life. That had turned into a nightmare that haunted me every night.

It was about 10 am when I woke up, got up and went to take a bath. Today I didn't go to work because besides the fact that I got home late because I was talking to my friends there was an electrical problem in the block where the library was.

It's the first time in 5 years that I have taken a break. The library takes up most of my time as well as my other jobs. I've thought about hiring someone to help me, but I still don't trust anyone other than my friends or people close to me. Maybe it's time to put it all behind me.

I got a call. My friend implored me to bring her something to eat because if she stopped working on her project, she would lose the "inspiration" she had worked so hard to find. She finally convinced me, and I told her I would come after I cooked something for her. I knew why she called me and not her apathetic and rude boyfriend. He was probably sleeping in his flat, trying to get over his hangover, because whenever he plays in bars, or for one reason or another, he ends up drowning in alcohol. The next day he woke up in such a bad mood that it was better not to see him.

I finished getting ready, so I went downstairs to prepare some food for my poor and hungry friend. If I didn't hurry, her stomach would start eating itself. Ashley loved my cooking for her. She always said that my food kept her strong and inspired her to keep doing her things. I tried to start preheating the oven but realised there was no electricity. It was strange because a few moments ago there was. I try to turn it on again, but it doesn't seem to work. I turned on the lights in the house, but they didn't work either. It was so weird. I decided to go and see if the fuses had stopped working. I went out to the backyard, and when I arrived, I noticed that the lightbox had been forced open and that someone had cut the wires. A shiver ran down my spine. I felt the temperature start to drop. I ran into the house, closed the back door. I grabbed the bag on the table and ran out, closing the door as fast as I could.

I walked down the street. I was still thinking about what had happened. I remembered that yesterday, as usual, when I entered my house I didn't turn on any light and I went directly to my room, but there was nothing strange. My mobile phone started ringing, bringing me out of my thoughts, it was a message from my friend.

"Sasha, are you coming? I'm starving. I swear I'll pass out if I don't eat anything in the next 20 minutes :("

I smiled at how over the top I was and sent her a text telling her I was on my way. I hadn't been able to cook anything for her when I ran away from home. I didn't want to go back alone. I decided it was easier to buy hamburgers or something like that.
