Chapter Thirteen

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I reach the pack's den at daybreak.

Everyone is still sleeping.

These are the women whose men I have just slaughtered.

I feel the guilt.

But I remember Tanner's words.

I must forgive myself.

I was born to lead. To be a luna.

They will have to come to accept it.

One of them wakes.

"Who are you?" she demands.

"I am Kayla. Your luna."

"No you are not," she sneers. "I am luna of this pack."

"Your alpha tried to have his way with me. I killed him. This is his blood on my fur."

She is shocked.

I give her the most powerful stare I can.

She flinches.

"Come closer," she says. "Let me smell you."

I do not trust her.

"No. I am your luna now. You do as I say."

She does not reply.

One of the wolves stirs. She has a small pup with her.

"Who is that?" the pup asks.

The first wolf turns, her amber eyes blazing. "An intruder."

The small pup bares his teeth. "Shall I fight her?"
