In a villa near Chaoyang District, a handsome but cold youth tied the laces of his tennis shoes and grabbed his windbreaker. He took a glass of water from the kitchen and passed by his older brother, who was nursing a cup of hot chocolate.
"Jogging?" Jiang Xu asked, his expression tired.
Jiang Wuji leaned against the counter and studied his older brother. There were dark circles underneath his eyes, and he looked a bit gaunt. This older brother of his had always been laidback and lackadaisical. He never had the energy to care for things, and even when he divorced his wife, he just went back to his bed and slept it off.
But when 'she' passed away, this well-behaved older brother of his didn't come home until late in the morning, wasted and drunk. Their mother scolded him heavily, but he still didn't answer her questions as to what was wrong with him.
The twins were still young, so he didn't tell them the news immediately. Later on, when they insisted for the nth time that they wanted to visit Hui Yin, Jiang Xu finally told them the truth.
Both of them didn't believe him at first. Jiang Wuji even got angry at Jiang Xu, and increased the number of alarm clocks inside his room. He set them off at intervals, giving his older brother no time to sleep from dusk until dawn. It took Jiang Xu a week to finally discover where he hid all of them, but had the phantom sound of a ringing alarm clock in his ears for nearly a month afterwards.
"Mmm." Jiang Wuji put down his glass of water and got ready to go out of the house.
Just before he did, a high-pitched voice came from behind him and grabbed the back of his windbreaker.
"Wuji!"
Jiang Wuji turned around and glared at the young girl that was putting her paws on his clothes. He unpeeled her hand away.
"Where are you going? Are you going jogging? Can I come? What kind of girls do you like?"
This was all said in one breath, with no breaks in between. Jiang Wuji ignored her and went out of the house. Undeterred, Qiao Chyou followed his footsteps and jogged with him while continuing to fire question after question at him.
She was the cousin of Jiang Xu's divorced ex-wife, and she was staying in his villa because she had fought with her mother about a minor issue. Qiao Chyou had a major crush on Jiang Wuji, so she constantly pestered him.
They jogged until they came to the more crowded streets in Beijing. Jiang Wuji entered a nearby convenience store and bought a bottle of water. Qiao Chyou excitedly followed after him. While she was buying tons of snacks and choosing between different types of juice in the fridge, he came outside and sat on an empty table.
As he drank, his line of sight coincided with another girl sitting on the table opposite his. She was eating an ice cream with a happy face.
Without knowing why, the cold expression he wore for the last several years thawed. Just as the girl raised her eyes, an angelic smile hooked up the corners of his lips.
Jiang Wuji fiddled with something in his back pocket before he stood up and approached her.
"Older sister, can I ask you for a favor?"
If anyone who knew him heard him speak right now, they would probably feel very terrified. His icy voice that could resurrect demons from the abyss of hell had turned sweet as honey. Only, one couldn't be certain if that sweetness did not contain a lethal poison.
She put away her ice cream and smiled at him. "Sure. What is it?"
"I seemed to have lost my phone." Jiang Wuji put on a helpless look and patted his windbreaker for emphasis. "Can you lend me your phone for a bit?"
"Oh. That's too bad." She sympathized with his plight and readily handed over her phone.
Jiang Wuji dialed his number and waited for the ringing to end before he looked at her sadly like a kicked puppy, "Someone must have snatched it."
"You should have been more careful." She took her phone back and warned, "If you're only jogging, you shouldn't take your phone with you. Just leave it at home."
"I'll remember that." He nodded obediently.
The door to the convenience store opened, and a tall, handsome man came out holding a plastic bag filled with beer. Jiang Wuji's eyes narrowed.
"Come on, let's go." The man lightly grabbed the girl's hoodie and lifted her up. Her small face became sullen.
"I can stand on my own!"
She pumped her legs like a little rabbit trying to run away before finally freeing herself. The two of them hailed a taxi cab and got in.
As soon as the tail lights of the taxi cab disappeared, Jiang Wuji fished out the phone that he switched to silent mode from his back pocket. He typed in the license plate number of the taxi and sent it to her. Then he added another text.
"Wuji! Look how many I bought!"
Qiao Chyou excitedly smooshed herself by his side and opened her bulging plastic bag. There were various snacks, chocolate bars, candies, and juice boxes that were stuffed into it...
Jiang Wuji didn't look and started jogging away from her. Qiao Chyou didn't give up and started another round of questioning.
But Jiang Wuji had long stopped paying attention to Qiao Chyou. He was thinking about the man and the girl from earlier.
When the fact that 'she' really passed away sank in after Jiang Xu told them the truth, Jiang Wuji stopped blaming his brother and found another outlet for his anger.
Lu Shen.
As her husband, he should have protected her. Not only did he hurt her, he was also the one who invited a murdering snake like Nian Zhen into his own home. Jiang Wuji blamed him for her death.
He wanted to make him pay, but with his current abilities, he was not his match. He could only bide his time and grow up more before attacking him.
But, Jiang Wuji did not make himself idle in this span of time. He purposely threw eggs into his home because he wanted get his attention. Once Lu Shen began investigating him, it clearly revealed that Jiang Wuji was a genius when compared amongst his peers. His exam results were always at the very top, and he easily picked up things.
Jiang Wuji made sure that it eerily echoed that man's own backstory.
Lu Shen didn't have a heir. That much was common knowledge. Even if the chance of him becoming Lu Shen's heir was slim, a chance was still a chance. And, Jiang Wuji's pranks on his home would seem very childish to him. Can a childish youth like that really harbor any sinister thoughts from his point of view?
Of course not.
Once Lu Shen thought that and lowered his guard, Jiang Wuji would destroy the company that he painstakingly built from inside out.
He took something precious from him, so it was only natural that he would return the favor.
Jiang Wuji tilted his head and smiled. It was a very cold smile, tainted by a trace of malice.
Qiao Chyou saw that he was in a good mood and immediately took the opportunity to ask again, "What kind of girls do you like?"
"..."
Unlike before, Jiang Wuji properly thought about it. He thought of the only woman that piqued his interest but was now gone. Then he recalled the girl that was happily eating her ice cream earlier.
He concluded to himself, "...it seems that I like older women," while increasing the length of his strides.
Qiao Chyou didn't manage to hear him. "What did you just say?"
But Jiang Wuji didn't bother to answer her again.
