As the captains gathered in the meeting hall, a palpable tension filled the air. Captain-Commander Yamamoto stood at the head of the room, his commanding presence alone enough to draw every eye and silence every whisper.
Beside him, Seijirou Kageyama held his composure, his expression calm, though his recent battle with Yamamoto had left him with a barely noticeable sheen of sweat.
His zanpakuto, Tenjitsu, was secured at his side, but even sheathed, their aura seemed to ripple subtly, a testament to the power they possessed.
Yamamoto's voice cut through the silence. "After a thorough assessment, I hereby declare that Seijirou Kageyama is qualified to assume the position of captain."
A murmur spread through the hall as the captains exchanged glances. Captain Hiroshi Shima of the 3rd Division, who had recommended him, let out a sigh of relief, while Unohana watched with a serene, unreadable expression.
However, some captains looked skeptical. One of them, Captain Love Aikawa from the 7th Division, spoke up, voicing what was on the minds of several.
"Captain-Commander, if I may," he began respectfully, "Seijirou's qualification for captaincy, as you've declared, is usually demonstrated by the Captain Proficiency Test—Bankai mastery with at least three witnesses. Or through personal recommendations. Why did you decide on a direct combat test with him, especially when Bankai was not involved?"
Yamamoto met Love's gaze calmly, and his tone carried the weight of authority and experience.
"That is a valid question, Captain Aikawa, and one that I will answer. The standard requirements, as we know, are in place to ensure each candidate possesses the strength and skill necessary to lead a division. However, as Captain-Commander, I am obligated to consider more than mere qualification."
He glanced around the room, letting his gaze linger on each captain in turn. "Seijirou's potential, his strength, is such that I needed to understand the nature of his power firsthand."
There was a moment of silence, but Captain Daigo Shihouin of the 2nd Division, Yoruichi's father, nodded, intrigued by Yamamoto's words. "Are you implying that Kageyama's Bankai might be too powerful to safely demonstrate in Soul Society, even in controlled conditions?"
Yamamoto nodded slightly. "Precisely. His reiatsu, even in Shikai, was enough to create a noticeable disruption, and I sensed a deep potential within his zanpakuto—one that, if unleashed in Bankai, could destabilize the very fabric of the space around us."
Captain Shinji Hirako, from the 5th Division, folded his arms, clearly weighing the Captain-Commander's explanation. "So, this battle… it was meant to measure the level of power and control he has without relying on Bankai?"
Yamamoto looked to Seijirou, a rare glimmer of approval in his eyes. "Exactly. In combat, Seijirou demonstrated remarkable control, strength, and tactical insight—qualities of a true captain. His recent victory against a Vasto Lorde wasn't just a matter of luck. It was a testament to his prowess and ability to defend Soul Society from its most formidable enemies. I am convinced he could lead a division without needing to rely solely on Bankai."
Another murmur spread through the captains, but this time there was less skepticism and more curiosity. Daigo Shihouin spoke up next, his voice calm but his expression earnest.
"Captain-Commander, we all respect your judgment. I've known Seijirou for years, and I know his strength firsthand. Still, his ascension through a one-on-one trial by combat is… unconventional. Given that this method is usually reserved for succession through defeat of an existing captain, wouldn't it undermine the Captain Proficiency Test?"
Yamamoto's expression hardened slightly. "This test was not conducted under the traditional method of Trial by Combat. I made it clear to Seijirou that this was a test of his potential, not a fight for a title. There was no killing intent in our clash, only an assessment of his ability to safeguard the interests of Soul Society. He would only assume the title of captain by my formal declaration, not through a conquest of blood."
Captain Daigo nodded as he stepped forward. "In my estimation, if Captain-Commander Yamamoto deemed it necessary to test him directly, that alone speaks volumes about Seijirou's capability. I support his ascension."
Unohana, who had been listening in silence, nodded in agreement. "I second that. Seijirou has demonstrated the qualities necessary for leadership. Captain-Commander's trust in him reflects his value to the Gotei 13."
As the support for Seijirou's promotion grew, a few other captains voiced their agreement, including Captain Hirako. Yamamoto listened to each, then finally addressed the entire assembly.
"Seijirou Kageyama's strength, evident in his victory against a Vasto Lorde and his control of his Shikai, is beyond question. His determination to protect Soul Society is unquestionable, and his ability to lead is clear."
Pausing, he allowed his gaze to settle on each captain who still appeared unsure. "As Captain-Commander, my responsibility is not only to uphold tradition but to ensure our continued strength and security. I will not risk instability by forcing him to demonstrate a Bankai that may cause disorder. The trial he underwent was one of control and tactical wisdom, not merely power."
With his final statement, Yamamoto turned to Seijirou. "Seijirou Kageyama, you have proven your worth and demonstrated qualities fitting of a leader. Do you accept the role of captain of the 3rd Division?"
Seijirou straightened, bowing respectfully. "It would be my honor, Captain-Commander."
A solemn yet approving silence followed his words, broken only by Yamamoto's decisive tone. "Then it is decided. Effective immediately, Seijirou Kageyama is the new captain of the 3rd Division."
A ripple of quiet acknowledgment swept through the hall as Seijirou raised his head, meeting the gazes of the captains around him.
Although some remained uncertain, they offered nods of respect. His journey to captaincy was unconventional, but his strength, 'loyalty', and dedication were unquestioned.
The respect of those who believed in him—Yamamoto, Unohana, Daigo Shihouin, and Shima—was evident, and that was enough.
He does not need to get close to them, as long as they can work with him, then all is good.
As the meeting concluded and the captains began to depart, Yamamoto approached him with a final, approving nod.
"Your journey does not end here, Captain Kageyama. It is only beginning. Remember, true strength lies not in power alone, but in the wisdom to wield it with responsibility. Make us proud."
Seijirou bowed deeply, feeling the excitement rush over him as he was now closer to his goals. With the power of a Captain, it would be far easier to execute his plans and cover up Aizen's tracks.
As the doors to the meeting hall closed behind him, he walked forward as the new captain of the 3rd Division, and soon, to be something more.
