Chapter 246: Night Meet Up

August 27th, 2060

It's been hours since we got to this world. We stayed in Cawess' house not so far, but left to arrive in Washington DC as soon as possible. Because there is a reason behind that. He wants to lead me to the White House.

Because there is a memorial monument about the Third World War being built outside of the White House. I want to pay a visit to that monument. I want to show my respect to the fallen men in war, they're real heroes. Not we cowards.

Right after coming to DC, he booked for us and himself rooms in a hotel. We intend to rest in this place overnight.

Shera, Reimi and I stay in a same room. Sarah and Hatano are next door to us. Meanwhile, Cawess and his secretary - Seeley, are staying together. Cawess invited me to his room whenever I like.

He said there is something he wants to discuss with me.

I am actually willing to meet up with Cawess. However, my need seems to be a bit... large. I suddenly want to be intimated with my wife more than usual today. But she is exhausted.

I intend to meet my old friend later after having time with my dear wife. Now I am struggling to deal with it.

Every person who books a hotel will receive a watch like this, it's used to control things.

"Do you want to turn off the conditioner, Shera?".

I shut off the air conditioner after hearing that. Done solving the problem, I remove the watch and place it on the cabinet. Then I return to her.

I glance at Reimi when I get outside. Her eyes and her face seem to be a bit tired, I think she should go to bed now.

"My wife is sleeping". - I glanced at the door while talking, later I returned to gaze at Reimi.  "I will go out to see the Colonel for a while".

"Understood". - She replied to me, later standing on the right side of the door to guard

"You better go to bed, Reimi". - I started walking slowly in the hallway.  "Rest, don't push yourself too hard, hear me".

I keep walking while trying to hear her reply. Finally, no reply is heard, it makes me more concerned about Reimi. However, I hope she goes to bed as she realizes she is too tired to guard.

I try to put off everything in my mind. I focus on walking in the hallway, passing each room to arrive at my old friend's room to speak with him. Later, I spot Lt. Seeley guarding a door. She sees me, but makes no movement.

"Sir?". - I came to her, and she questioned me with sharp eyes and a cold voice

"Cawess, is he here?".  "He invited me to meet him".

She doesn't reply to me but raises her open palm toward my face. Then the Lieutenant tilts her face to the right, opening and closing her mouth as if she is talking. From what I know, this secretary has a mini walkie-talkie sticking inside her mouth. That she may be communicating with Cawess.

"Yes, Sir... yes, Sir...". - She kept repeating those words, later she returned to look at me.  "Roger, get in, Sir". - Then she opened the door

I go inside the room and the door is later closed. I look around, I see Cawess sitting at a desk, examining the military intel or something. The laptop's screen seems to be a hologram. It is showing something like military intel, but it's distance from me so I have to come to it closer.

"I thought you wouldn't come, Sarge". - He turned around and looked at me.  "Gimme a moment, we'll chat later". - He returned to look at the screen

The screen later shows a lot of images and writings, flipping so fast and I cannot read all of those things. The laptop is turned off a moment later. Cawess gets up by putting his hand on the chair, then he walks to a couch. Somehow I see my old friend struggling in walking, a bit miserable.

"Here, Sarge". - He sat down.  "Water, shall we?". - He grabbed two thick glass cups on the table, putting them below the water vending machine

I follow him and take a seat as the cups of water are done filled. Cawess takes one, another is given to me. He drinks a bit, later puts down the cup. I don't drink the water cup but put it down.

"I thought you wouldn't come to see me this late".  "I thought "ancient" men would go to bed early". - He straightened his posture.  "Just kiddin' ".

"You said you invited me here for a reason". - I focused on the straight line instead of asking around.  "What is it? About... war or something?". - If Katia sent us here for a reason, I would always think it would be about battling

"How did you know, Sergeant?". - He was a little surprised.  "You're fast, I love that".  "Let's start, shall we?".

"Nod".

Cawess later gazes at me, as if he is concentrating to tell me the story as soon as possible. My right elbow is being put on the table. I stare at the Colonel, my eyes are asking him to say out everything.

"Well... are you still remembering the war?".

"Yeah...". - I might have forgotten some details, but its main parts, I remember all

"Good...". - Cawess put held his palms together, placing the elbows on the table.  "The problem is... at midnight of day 29th, I will have to go to Japan". - Alright.  "I will be commanding my troops, assisting our US and the allies in downfalling China". - Maybe this is the objective the Goddess wants us to do

"But before saying anything further, I want to brief you on something, historical stuff". - Cawess put his hands down.  "Let's return to May 14th, '42, alright?".

"Nod".

"Okay...". - He looked above.  "After ending the war, Communist China government did not hand to the Allies those who caused the war and made war crimes". - Then he looked at me.  "That's why our US military made an attack on Beijing, the Assault on Beijing".  "But it ended up like Cuba, like the Pay of Big".

"An assassination team had been sent there, to assassinate President Tian Zhao of China".  "All died". - Then Cawess pulled out a cigarette

"Or so we thought". - He held the cigarette, but did not light up its head.  "Eight years after the incident, a message was sent to our US military secretly".  "It came from Lieutenant Michael Meredo - one of the members in the assassination group being sent there 8 years ago". - Then he pulled out a lighter, lighting up the cigarette

"That son of a bitch is still alive, can you believe it?!". - He said loud to me.  "He said his entire group was dead, he was staying in an underground prison, somewhere in Beijing". - Cawess put his lighter back into his pocket.  "Not yet, he also confirmed that he is staying with other allied prisoners, who were considered "missing" in the world war". - He started enjoying smoking

"Sorry, buddy". - He apologized, and immediately smoked again

Cawess breathes out white smokes after a short moment of smoking. I accidentally see something exposed from his sleeves, from one of his hands. From what I see, one of his hands seems to be different from one other. Its skin seems to be unnatural... I might have forgotten something, I think so.

"What's wrong?". - Cawess stopped smoking as he saw me focusing on his unnatural hand.  "Oh, this replica shit?". - He pulled up his sleeves, showing me his hand

"You forgot or what?". - Cawess was a bit unpleasant.  "Shit...". - He looked away, turning off his cigarette.  "Sigh... I cannot believe that you forgot the pain we went through together, brother". - He returned to look at me, showing his disappointment

I try to remember what I've forgotten. Right after a minute, my mind recollects something and lights me up. Alright. I remember it now.

From the beginning to the end of the war, Cawess had fought and lost one of his hands and one of his legs. The previous unnatural hand I saw from him... was a prosthetic.

"That's all he knows".  "There may be more of them in the China government!". - Cawess glanced at me with his very confirming eyes.  "But has been 10 years since that letter was sent... he might have died... or still survives".

"That's why we made out a theory... a very dark one".  "Sigh...". - He sighed a little.  "The world war... could it be set up to break out by some mysterious forces that we don't know?".  "In the same year, one of our allies attacked China for a reason... we finally had an excuse to step on their land".

From what he said, I assume that our main duty is to kill the President of mainland China government. However, I hope my conclusion is not wrong, or I may die stupidly. No one wants to step into the war zone. So do I, I just want to stay with my loved ones.

"September 1st will be the day we launch the Shanghai invasion... that province will be used as our first plate". - Cawess got up, putting his hand on the table.  "No matter what, we will have to destroy the Communist China government and that non-human man...". - He came close to me, looking at me.  "Like I said, there may be more of them... we will "search and destroy" till we kill them all".

"May I go with you?". - I got up, asking Cawess

"With me...? Sure".  "I will be commanding from Japan, you may give me some advice to attack as well".  "I'll listen".

"No, I mean can I join and fight in the warzone?".

"Are you fucking nuts, Sarge?! Would you want to die that fucking badly?!". - He immediately scolded me.  "Tell me! You would leave your love ones just to fight and die?! I cannot believe it!".

"I want to fight for my homeland, that's all I want!". - Actually that was just a lie

I'm not stupid to leave my loved ones here. I'm always cautious with men, especially this one... he may try... to steal my wife and my loved ones from me, I must be on guard. However, assassinating might be the objective of why the Goddess sent us here. To return to Euro Grant, I should take part in the warzone.

"You never change, just stupid like you always are". - Cawess later walked away, didn't want to see me anymore

"Uhhh...". - Now I must say something to settle down the situation.  "I didn't mean to". - I sat down, calming my voice.  "I'm quite extreme, am I?". - I lowered my tone.  "That's my fault, I'm sorry about that".  "Alright... I will be following you, but will assist you to command the battle, alright?". 

"But... just one favor, can you escort us to the warzone when the battle is over?".  "All I need... I want to see the body... of that President".

Cawess doesn't say anything, he stands before the wall with his back opposing me, trying to calm down. He stands there just like that for a few minutes, both of us say nothing during those minutes. All of sudden. He turns around and approaches me, still a bit mad. However, he places his hand on my right shoulder, sighing softly.

"Stop fucking retard again, can you?". - I want to beat the shit out of you

"Alright, I will see what I can do... not 100 percent, okay?". - I might try to sneak in the deployed troops to get into the warzone... should I?

"Welcome to the F.R.O.N.D.E.R, Sergeant". - Wait... what is F.R.O.N.D.E.R?

"Fronder?". - He suddenly put his hand away from me

"You should find out its meaning yourself". - Later he looked around.  "Alright... have anything else to say?".

I stay silent for a moment, deeply thinking. A few seconds pass, and I realize that there is a question that needs to be said out as soon as possible before my friend.

"Hey, Caw". - I stared at him, showing my seriousness and willingness

"In the past, I came here and managed to return to my place".  "But I am not so sure about it this time". - I tried to make him focus on my explanation.  "In case we can't return but stay here... I hope you can help me and others to find jobs in this new world".

"Okay". - Cawess replied casually, he walked around

"I'm serious about this problem!". - I made my voice a bit loud.  "My subordinates and I may get used to it fast, but not Reimi and my wife".  "Smash!". - I hit the table, asking him to focus

"I'm doin' that, keep telling". - He stopped walking, his eyes pointed at me

"They just newly know about electricity and other stuff, they don't know how to operate or to work with modern things".  "I'm afraid that they will be depended on me... it will be very miserable". - Then I got up, approaching the Colonel. 

"Right after the conflict... can you...?".

"I will see what I ca-".

"Taking normal jobs is alright, I need nothing higher". - Honestly, I don't want to owe anyone... or anyone owes me... it will be very difficult

"Roger, Sergeant".  "Nod...". - Cawess tapped on my shoulder, making a light nod.  "I will see what I can do when it comes... but at first...". - He got his hand off me, and he took out another cigarette.

"Don't think too much... or too far... it's bad".  "You are 27 biologically, life is still long ahead, just relax and breath". - He put the cigarette in his mouth

"Anything else?".

"Shakes head".
