Chapter 50: Life’s Only Brighter with You

I step out into the bright morning light without a destination. Where do you even go when you’re inadvertently fired? Home? Too depressing. I stare at the bay lapping beside me and take a detour from the parking lot to the walkway. I’ve gazed at it so many times in the last few months. I might as well enjoy it before I’m banned from the premises.

A few joggers run past as I easily stride to the nearest bench. What now? I always threatened to leave Ocean Tech since the moment I heard the name Saz Fairweather. Now it all just feels like a dream. One long-winded, glorious dream. I plop onto the stone bench with a sigh and open the front pocket of my bag. The ring that Saz proposed with that night looks at me and I pinch it between my fingers, admiring it in the sunlight. It was supposed to be a good luck charm. Guess nothing really helps the unlucky.

A shadow casts over me and I look up to see Saz, winded with a sheepish smile. “I didn’t think I’d catch up to you in time.”
