Chapter 25: Unwanted Invitations

The tension between us is thicker than syrup as we work through the rest of the morning. Jasper was a hungover mess at breakfast, constantly apologizing for the way he acted like a sad, broken record. I guess his confidence last night came from the liquor.

I sip on my water and scroll through the internet in search of information. Saz wasn’t wrong when he mentioned earlier about losing two days. Zelia wouldn’t even let me look at the computer Saz sent over yesterday once my nails were done.

I stare at the bright pink polish and sigh. So much for that promise I made. What am I even going to say to her when she walks through that door? Sorry for sleeping with your boyfriend? She’d skin me alive for sure. Or worse. I physically shudder at the thought and Saz glances over at me.

“Everything alright over there?”

“Yep. Just thinking about all the different ways Zelia has access to killing me,” I say, casually clicking on a website link to tree growth.
