-The 23rd October, 1203.
'Diary entry: It has been already 4 months since I came to the 13th century. My hair has grown a lot and I have gained some weight. It's forbidden to take a bath in river and lakes. If you take a bath in the Buir lake and is discovered, the punishment is execution. Hence, I asked a carpenter to make a wooden bath and I am having a bath once a week. Unfortunately, even though I take hot bath every week, still I wish there was shampoo and soap here.'
The Project Pear furnace is complete. The Bessemer's convertor is already assembled. Yesterday Zuchi khankhuu and I held a mock test for producing steel. After several failed attempts of producing steel, we have sucessfully produced around 200jin of steel/200 jin equals to 100kg/ at the dusk. By our first ingots of steel, two blacksmiths who work at my ministry worked non stop in the night and made a longsword. Suggested by Dorj, The longswords are coated by protective layer of chromium to to make it stainless steel.
At the blade of the longsword, in ancient Mongolian script, 'Under the will of the eternal blue sky!' is engraved making the longsword aesthetic and beautiful.
At Temuujin's settlement, troops are having a military trainings, where women are herding their livestock. It is an usual day at Temuujin's settlement, but at the main ger of Temuujin three people are having a meeting. Today there is no Khuraldai, but Temuujin, but Zuchi khankhuu and Minister Dorj is assembled.
Zuchi khankhuu and Minister Dorj are kneeling in front of Temuujin. They have presented their first longsword created by the first steel produced by their pear furnace. The first longsword is to be kept by lord Temuujin.
"Is it true that you can produce around 50 swords in a day by that pear furnace?" asked Temuujin with serious eyes.
"Yes father. But if we add more Blacksmiths, we can produce more swords and arrowheads in a day. The furnace is not restricted by 200jin per day. It can produce up to 100,000 jin of steel by one smelting." replied Zuchi Khankhuu with pride and smile.
After hearing his son Zuchi's affirmative reply, Temuujin's eyes widened a lot and he become shocked.
'What? 100,000 jin of steel by one smelting? That is higher than Western Xia's annual production of steel! If we produce this much steel by just one smelting then we can even sell the surplus to our neighboring countries' thought Temuujin, looking at the beautiful longsword in his hand.
"My lord, this first batch of 50 longswords will never rust! They are coated by a certain mineral that protects them from corrosion." said minister Dorj while bowing.
After hearing Dorj's explanation, Temuujin gaped and couldn't hide his shock in his eyes.
'Stainless steel is unheard in the 13th century! With stainless steel longswords, Mongolian army would be more destructive' thought Dorj.
Longswords are longer than sabers. Naturally if you have longer swords then you can cut wider areas threatening people around you! Sabers are better for one versus one duels, but longswords are better in battlefield.
"This sword is priceless! The word 'under the will of the eternal blue sky' made this sword a piece of art!" praised Temuujin and laughed out loud.
"Lord Temuujin, please don't flatter us! " replied Dorj while kneeling.
'Lord Temuujin is satisfied by our results! I wonder if I bring more modern technologies in this era, I wonder how fast can I change this lifestyle?' thought Dorj in his mind. Dorj looked at his Neuralink interface and felt the great achievements the humanity has discovered in the future.
"Lord father! Let's go to our workshop! But this news must be kept a secret, otherwise our neighboring countries may attack us to get our pear furnace!" said Zuchi khankhuu.
True. if the news of Bessemer's convertor reach our neighboring countries, then they would attack Temuujin without any restraints. Production of 100,000 jin per one smelting is unheard of.
"Zuchi my son. Your words have truth in it. Please proceed. Prohibit any stranger to enter your workshop without your and Minister Dorj's approval. Also I am increasing your number of guards by 100" decreed Temuujin while holding the longsword.
After the meeting has ended, Temuujin visited the workshop and was introduced to the process of smelting. How cold air is inserted to the furnace to burn the impurities in the pig iron and how the steel is produced.
A blacksmith has taken a molten steel into a engraved stone and after it takes a shape, the blacksmith started to hammer the glowing steel. In a matter of an hour, a longsword is taking its shape.
Temuujin has seen the process of the steel producing and smithing with high satisfaction.
'I think we can produce high amount steel every day and make them ingots. But in order to make steel, I need raw materials such as ore and coal. Perhaps if we add more workers at the mines we currently have, Zuchi khankhuu's guards would not work as miners.' thought Dorj in his mind.
"Lord Temuujin, it may look easy to produce steel. But we are short in manpower at this moment. Zuchi khankhuu has mobilized his own guards to exploit ore and coal from the nearby abandoned mines." said Dorj while looking at lord Temuujin.
"Oh, that should be a problem. We have 500 prisoners from Wan Khan's troops. I was planning to send them as a death squad in the future, but if you are short in manpower, I am giving those prisoners as slaves to you! Use those people at your disposal!" replied Temuujin while making a decree.
"Thank you my lord!" bowed Dorj and looked at Zuchi khankhuu.
Zuchi khankhuu had a very satisfied expression, knowing that his guards would not be miners anymore.
"Lord father, how much swords and arrowheads do we need to produce? And should we sell the surplus ingots?" asked Zuchi from his father Lord Temuujin.
"As the matter of producing our weapons, please produce 50 longswords for our generals, around 5,000 sabers and 200,000 arrowheads for our troops. I will discuss with Khoorchi about selling our surplus steel ingots. You just need to supply the steel to Khoorchi. Dorj, your ministry would have 30% of the income from the steels in the future. But don't produce more than 50,000 jin of steel. Otherwise our neighboring countries would become suspicious on us and would send their spies!" instructed Temuujin.
"Yes father!" replied Zuchi.
In the evening, as agreed, Temuujin has sent 500 slaves to Minister Dorj. Currently since Dorj has only Jegei as his personal guard, Zuchi khankhuu has sent his 50 soldiers to protect Dorj.
At the shore of Buir lake, 500 troops are lined in 10 rows with 50 people in a line. Looking at this number of slaves, Dorj has become shocked.
The ragged clothes and skinny body of them has made Dorj feel sympathy for them. They must have family and kids at Khereit tribe, yet they are now slaves of Temuujin to be given to Dorj at his disposal.
"I will let you work under me for one condition!" shouted Dorj as loud as he can. Standing in front of 500 people made him feel anxiety but since he is a minister, he tried his best to not look weak.
"If you work at our mine for one year! I promise to release you to your Khereit tribe!" said Dorj while walking and looking at the eyes of the prisoners.
The dull and blank eyes of the prisoners in the first row started to get light and they are focused on Dorj.
'In the movies, all leaders say motivational speeches before they start the battle! But even though you scream as loud as you can, I believe the people who are at the back cannot hear me! Then if you say motivation speeches to thousands of troops, I believe only 20 or 30 people can hear me!' thought Dorj and felt betrayed by the movies produced by Hollywood. Dorj initially wanted to make a motivational speech to the slaves to prevent them escape and make them have high productivity. But unfortunately imagination and real life is totally different.
"Repeat my words if you heard! Work for one year and you are free!" shouted Dorj as loud as he can.
"Work for one year and you are free!" mumbled few people in the front row.
"I didn't hear you! Work for one year and you are free!" shouted Dorj again.
"Work for one year and you are free!" shouted the people in the front row. But the people in the back row had confused eyes and looked at themselves.
"Again I didn't hear you! Work for one year and you are free!" shouted Dorj again.
"Work for one year and you are free!" shouted almost every prisoners.
"Again! Work for one year and you are free!" shouted Dorj as loud as he can.
"Work for one year and you are free!" shouted every prisoners in unison.
"Two meals per day! Warm bed to sleep!" shouted Dorj again.
"Two meals per day! Warm bed to sleep!" shouted few people in the front row.
"I didn't hear you guys! Two meals per day! Warm bed to sleep!" shouted Dorj while looking at the eyes of the prisoners. The dull and blank eyes of the prisoners started to have spark of hope when they have heard the words of his.
"Two meals per day! Warm bed to sleep!" shouted the prisoners in unison.
Dorj felt success when he saw the eyes of the prisoners change when they shout in unision. Actually giving hope to the prisoners is the best way to motivate them.
Dorj remembered that in the modern era labour camps were created during the second world war. People worked hard all day without enough food and nutrition to be only burned in the furnace and become soap for the soldiers.
The difference here is that Dorj will keep his words and provide enough nutrition for those prisoners and make them work with reasonable schedule.
"Work for one year and you are free! Two meals per day! Warm bed to sleep!" shouted Dorj again.
"Work for one year and you are free! Two meals per day! Warm bed to sleep!" shotued the prisoners in unison with enthusiasm.
"Work 10 hours per day, Work 6 days and have a break for one day!" shouted Dorj, again after making some thoughts.
"Work 10 hours per day, work 6 days and have a break for one day!" shouted the prisoners in unison.
Finally when the prisoners do have a common goal, then only did Dorj split the prisoners into units. Since Dorj didn't know any particular best way to split people into units, he implemented lord Temuujin's 10-men squad, 100-men company structure.
