It was another peaceful night in San Fransokyo. At a supposedly abandoned warehouse, a weapons cartel was busy bringing in their latest shipment of experimental firearms. The shipment was a lot smaller that anticipates as their members had been attacked by the vigilante calling himself Nightlock at the dock, and the police had confiscated the rest of the crates. Nevertheless, the cartel had managed to get a few crates out of the docks and were going to make the best of what they had. They had managed to work out of sight from the eyes of Big Hero 6 just fine. However, that was until Nightlock showed up. Since then, he had been causing massive headaches for almost every crime syndicate in the entire city.
"C'mon guys, hurry it up." The new boss said, as the last one was caught at the docks, "I want to get these guns loaded and ready before that vigilante gets here."
"Same here, boss." Said one of the goons, "After hearing what happened at the docks, I don't even want to meet the guy."
"Well, prepare to not get your wish," said another goon, fear starting to rise in his voice.
"What makes you say that?" asked the first goon.
"You guys might want to see this."
The boss and goon walked over to where the second goon was looking and saw a small black device in the shape of a crescent moon attached to one of the weapons in the crates.
"What is that?" asked the goon. The boss however, realized what it was.
"Uh-oh." He said. As soon as he did, the lights in the warehouse went dark.
"All guns ready!" the boss shouted, "He's here!"
The thugs scrambled to action, loading whatever gun they could find and looking around, unaware of the figure silently moving among them. Suddenly, the sound of two swords being unsheathed was heard as a dark figure suddenly appeared and began cutting down the thugs.
"Get me out of here!" the boss shouted as two thugs stepped in front of him to get him to safety. The dark figure, Nightlock, saw this.
"You're not getting off that easy!" he said and proceeded to chase him, tossing small explosive charges on the crates as he passed them. The three thugs turn a corner as Nightlock charges, but then he hears the sounds of a small scuffle, and, turning the corner, he sees the three on the ground, unconscious. Standing over them was a woman in a black jumpsuit with striking red hair.
"You're a hard man to find, Nightlock. I'll give you that." She said.
"Who the hell are you?" Nightlock asked, "and why are you doing my job?"
"Call me Black Widow. And I didn't do anyone's job but my own. I merely decided to take down these three boys for you to see me as someone you can trust."
"Trust?"
"I represent an organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. We specialize in the discovery and tracking of potentially dangerous beings, usually enhanced ones, although some aren't."
"Yeah, I know who you guys are," Nightlock snapped, "Just get to the point."
"I'll explain on the way, but to put it simply, a new threat recently emerged and we think you can help stop it."
"How bad is it?"
"World-threatening bad."
Nightlock thought for a second. After all the thugs and cartels he had taken down, he decided he could use a decent challenge.
"Alright. I'm in." he said, "But first, you might want to stand back" he hit a button on his wrist and the warehouse exploded from within, the charges he had set earlier detonating.
Black Widow nodded: "Very impressive. Now come on, the jet's waiting."
A few minutes later the quinjet was flying over the sea away from the city. Inside, Black Widow handed Nightlock a datapad which showed footage and pictures of Shade.
"Who, or what, is that?" he asked.
"We have no idea," Black Widow answered, "He only introduced himself as Shade and then proceeded to attack our men after they further questioned him. Whatever his true intentions are on Earth, he does not want us finding out about them and, if you ask see, they're probably hostile."
"You really think I can take this thing down?"
"Well, not just you. We're pulling in a few others who we think can help as well." Black Widow said, changing the display on the pad to show multiple files of people Nightlock knew nothing of. They were incredibly diverse too: from a guy in an incredibly bulky and weaponized suit of armor to a lizard man to a guy who seemed to control some kind of black goo.
"I suggest you start reading those," she continued, "You'll be meeting them soon."
Nightlock flipped through the files and whistled in admiration: "This just got a whole lot more interesting…"
