'Heroes. They protect our cities, protect our people, and stop those who threaten their home. They are our cities' saviors, and I am grateful to them. But, just like all people, they have their flaws.'
It was night in San Fransokyo. The superheroes of Big Hero 6 would definitely be on their watch, but that didn't stop certain thug cartels from smuggling in their usual goods. This time around, however, they were smuggling in more than just illegal goods, they were smuggling in deadly experimental weapons. The crime boss was examining the crates as they were unloaded off the ship.
'Sometimes, as heroes protect us from some criminals, there are times they seem to ignore others. I am one of the very few who see this.'
"Ok, let's hurry this up fellas," he said into a radio, "I want to get these to ol' Yama before those meddling heroes find us." Unfortunately for him, Big Hero 6 was not the one he should be worried about.
'But what makes me different from the rest; I actually do something about it.'
Unknown to the thugs, a shadowy, hooded figure was silently watching from nearby, then he slipped back into the shadows, ready to make his move. One of the thugs was at one of the crates, opening it to check if it was one of theirs, seconds after opening it, he was sucked inside as something grabbed him and pulled him inside. Another one of the thugs noticed this and walked up to the crate.
"Yo, Ted. Everything good in there?" he said opening the crate, only to find the first thug strapped to the wall with a knife in his shoulder. The second thug looked around, his gun raised, but shaky.
"Who's there?!" he said, looking around. Then, he got out his radio and signaled the boss.
"Uhh, boss. We may have a problem here. Ted's been attacked, but I can't see…AHHHHH!!!!" he was cut off as the figure dropped behind him and grabbed him. The boss listened in shock, then he signaled the others: "We got company, keep an eye out."
"Is it those heroes?" asked a voice on the other end.
"I don't think so. We would have seen them by now."
"Alright, we'll be on guard. It's probably not that…wait…WHAT THE…?!!"
Just then, gunfire and screams were heard from the ship. As the boss watched, his men seemed to be running away and firing at…something, but hey were slowly being cut down one by one. The boss' bodyguard lifted his own gun
"I'll take care of this. You should get out of here." He said. The boss wasted no time getting to his car as the bodyguard ran to help the other thugs. The bodyguard looked around at the bodies of the dead or severely wounded thugs, and the figure standing over them. He was dressed in all black: his pants, his steel toed boots, his gloves, even his leather jacket and hood. In his hand was what seemed like a katana, but the blade was entirely straight. Another one of these weapons was in a sheath strapped on his back.
The bodyguard raised his gun: "Freeze! Turn around so I can see you."
The figure slowly turned around, and what the bodyguard saw began to frighten him. The face was entirely shrouded by his hood as well as a dark mask covering his mouth. All the bodyguard could see was his eyes, which were pure white. The guard was beginning to tremble; there was something very unnerving about how those eyes looked at him.
"Who…are you?" the guard asked.
The figure stared back silently, then spoke in a dark, synthesized voice: "Darkness."
Just then the area around the figure erupted into smoke and the guard ran forward, shooting wildly, but when the smoke cleared, the figure was nowhere to be found. Then a trap wire caught around the guard's foot yanking him into the air and leaving him hanging.
"Oh, and thanks for leaving my target wide open," echoed the figure's voice, "I really appreciate it."
Meanwhile the boss had made it to his car and was telling his driver to get away as fast as possible. Suddenly, he felt a small explosion as his tires suddenly burst. Then, the sound of glass breaking was heard as a knife shot through the front window, killing the driver. Then, he sees the dark figure land on the hood of his car. Grabbing a pistol, he scrambles out of the car and raises his gun to shoot, but the figure somehow disappeared. Terrified, the boss looks around, but nothing was there.
"Who the hell are you?" the boss shakingly asks.
Just then the figure's voice responds: "Your nightmare."
The boss whip around as a knife flies at his hand, knocking away the pistol. He turns to face the figure, now walking up to him.
"What do you want?" the boss continues to plead.
The figure gets close enough to where he grabs the boss by the neck and pins him to the car.
"What I want," the figure said, "is for the criminal underworld that has evaded justice for so long," here he holds up a small, burning brand, "to burn."
…
Less than an hour later, the police and Big Hero 6 arrive on the scene due to reports of gunfire in the area. They promptly arrested the thugs who were still alive and confiscated the weapon crates that were still there. Honey Lemon pulls the other heroes aside as she shows them the crime boss, unconscious and tied up next to his car, and with a symbol of a black crescent moon with a katana crossing through it branded on his neck. Wasabi begin to look around, nervous that the one who did this might still be around. Hiro just looks at the symbol intently.
Unknown to them, the figure watches everything from the top of a nearby building.
'You can send your guards, your precious hired guns and super villains, but I will always be there, waiting in the shadows. I…am Nightlock.'
I'd have to say Nightlock is one of my favorites to write. You gotta love a good anti-hero.
