Monday morning, before six o clock, I had already finished preparing for classes, except that my first one was only going to start in two hours.
"You really like acting like a philomath," my roommate said, with a smirk on her face.
Clara and I don't necessarily see an eye to eye as you may have realized. She is a third-year accounting science student and I'm pretty sure having a first-year student as a roommate isn't a thing in her world.
I know she was trying to upset me with her two cents comment, but I wasn't about to give her the satisfaction.
"I don't know if I'm supposed to take that as a compliment, "I said with a fake smile, " but if you must know, I really take my studies very seriously, and that includes going to class early".
She rolled her eyes then chuckled in a very annoying way.
I went downstairs, into the kitchen and took an apple from the fridge on my way out, and closed the front door behind me. And off I went, to the engineering faculty.
On my way there, I had been thinking about what my roommate had said earlier.
"Oh, just because she's a third-year student and obviously has been around for too long and probably knows everything that needs to be known about varsity, doesn't necessarily mean she should insult me for being a responsible student who attends her classes on time".
Yep, that's the kind of thoughts that raced through my head. It didn't take me more than fifteen minutes to get to the building that was written "engineering" in bold capital letters in front of it. I glanced at my wristwatch only to see that it was twenty minutes past six.
I sighed. Okay, I guess my roomie was right about me taking this "attending class right on time" too seriously.
I then decided to go into the Chalkboard, a coffee shop for engineering students, but it was quite tricky for me because I didn't know how to open its glass door. I thought it was one of those sensing doors that open the minute you come close to them because it didn't have a handle, but no, not this one.
I stood there like a confused chicken that was apparently trying to figure itself out, as to whether it's destiny is to fly as it saw eagles fly, hoping that it would by any chance notice me and open up for me.
Alright, I know, that was a bad example. But I'm guessing you do get the idea of how stupid I looked standing there.
To my saving grace, a really cute guy with spectacles on walked towards the door. He was wearing a brown jacket as it was a bit chilly and I saw him pulling a card out of the jacket's right pocket, tapping it on the Express mode beside him.
"Ohh I guess that's what the card I had it made at the Firga B last week is for.
It has a picture of me on it and I must say, I look rather sad. I was too busy last week that I didn't even get the chance to attend O week, hence I don't know where and how to use the student card, but I guess that's why I came early today. Ha, you see, I'm smart after all.
I took out mine from my side bag and tapped it where the cute guy tapped his. I was so happy when the door opened, because wow, I had been standing there for a while now that I even started to think that maybe I wasn't noticeable and this was going to happen to me every day for the rest of the year, well, until I finish my degree, or maybe my honors.
I headed straight to the counter and ordered my coffee. I love it dark with no sugar.
" That would be twenty-five rand," the lady behind the counter said, although the prices were already displayed on the screens at the back of her at the top.
I gave her the exact amount of money and hurried to the left corner booth of the shop to go and enjoy the coffee while watching people that were already arriving for the morning class through the window.
I didn't see anything there for a good second and all of a sudden, I saw a hairy foot in a flip flop on a skateboard and another one settled on the floor. My bag and cellphone were also on the the floor with the coffee all over my white T-shirt burning my chest and making a huge brown stain. I made a huge gasp... He bent over to pick up the skateboard.
When we both looked up, his fingers were running through his blonde hair and his very cute face with innocent puppy eyes was looking at me with an " I'm so sorry for running into you and spilling your coffee all over you" look. Pretty convincing.
I released a huge sigh.
Oh trust me, I was so ready to spit fire at him but those eyes prevented me. They prevented me from swearing with all kinds of swears. I couldn't stop admiring them.
I ran to the restroom without even giving it a second thought, to try and figure out how I was going to remove the huge coffee stain from my T-shirt and didn't even remind myself to pick up my bag and cellphone from the floor. This was my first day and you know what they say about first impressions.
