Chapter 20

Connor

EVERY so often, an event would happen and render me lost for words. I would say today is one of them.

It was so silent, you wouldn’t think a couple of people were in that part of the forest. All of us stood motionless as we looked at the ashes of what used to be a full-grown man.

I heard my mate scream before the man was set into flames by an invisible force. But it was too late. He had already set foot outside the border. And now he’s dead.

Tara looked wide-eyed at where he was standing. I can feel her guilt through the mate bond, so I turned her to face me.

“It’s not your fault,” I said gently.

She sobbed into my chest, clinging tightly to me. I wrapped my arms around her to soothe away the pain. If only I could take it all away.

“Well, now I know I ‘m definitely a dead man,” Alpha Maxim said in a low voice.

I turned to look at him as he faced South Forest’s direction. I can now say I’ve seen detachment in person. He looked scared and brave at the same time.
