ALONE: Retold

"Kelvin... If I leave, Zula will kill everyone," I said in a shaky voice, before breaking down into sobs. I closed my eyes and allowed the tears to flow freely. If I were to leave, then my previous experiences would come to pass. "What are you saying? You don't have to be a hero! Someone else can do that!" His voice was already rising. "I don't need a hero... I-I need my sister," he pleaded in a small broken voice. Hearing his pained voice shattered my bruising heart into a thousand pieces. "I love you all," I managed to say. "What? NO!" he screamed but I cut the connection. *** A ritual has governed Aromes since its existence. Every fifty years, the first born child of a family has to face Zula and die. Death & Blood

Present Time...

'...Jingle bell jingle bell, jingle all the way...'

"Make it stop! Make it stop!" I screamed while covering my ears and shutting my eyes hard.

But it only got louder.

Bang bang! The seesaw kept hitting the ground hard.

Whoosh whoosh! The merry-go-round span even faster.

Zwing zwing! The swing rotated on the pole keeping it in place.

'...twinkle twinkle little star! How I wonder what you are..." The music turned distorted.

I was now on my knees. Tears ran down my face nonstop.

"What is happening? Make it stop!" I screamed.

'...How I wonder what you are...' The song became eerie.

I caught sight of a long wooden chair. It was one of the chairs meant for parents who had brought their children to play in the park.

I quickly crawled to it and hid under it while pressing hard on both my ears to block out the creepy sounds.

'...Mary had a little lamb, little lamb...'

"Make it stop!!" I screamed even louder.

But the eerie sounds only continued.

***

It was at sunset that the sounds finally subsided. Yet I remained in my hidden position too scared to move. It took a while for the trembling to stop. I eventually had to come out of hiding because I had managed to get cramps in both my legs.

Slowly, I crept out of my little safe zone and peered around. It wasn't completely dark but seeing was hard.

I should get home fast before anything crazy begins again.

I was just about to move when a lamp pole came alive, illuminating a chair whose back was facing me. It was occupied by a young man.

His head was tilted backward, making it rest on the back of the chair. His hands dangled from both sides of the chair and dark liquids kept dripping from both his hands. This caused a pool of dark liquid to form around him.

My breathing started to quicken as I slowly advanced toward the young man. The closer I got, the more I realized it wasn't just some dark liquid.

It was blood.

At the realization of this, my heart started pounding hard. I got close enough and made the turn.

I gasped.

His clothes were soaked in his blood. His chest was cut open and a gaping hole stared back at me.

The moment I looked into his face I screamed.

"NO!"

I started shaking my head nonstop.

"T-this can't be true! This is not possible!" Tears started to fill my eyes as I refused to believe what I was seeing.

"K- Kelvin..." his name staggered out of my mouth.

No, it's not possible!

"I'm probably dreaming because that- this doesn't make any form of sense. It isn't even supposed to be possible. It's -it's insane! It's -it's uncalled for! It's stupid because my little brother can't die! He- He can't die! He just can't! No!" I argued with myself.

'Do you want to know what I wish for?'

I gasped at the memory of my own words.

'I wish you never existed!'

My left hand ran over my mouth in shock! In shock at the venom of my own words.

'I wish some misfortune can just befall you and you die!'

"I —I didn't mean that. I —didn't mean that."

The tears finally escaped my eyes.

'Be careful what you wish for... you might just get it...' Those we're his words.

"Oh my god! What have —what have I done?" I asked myself shakily.

My body started shaking from within. The pain was too much to handle. The migraine from earlier started to against my head.

"I —I did this. I'm the cause of all this. I—"

My lips vibrated uncontrollably as I kept staring at my little brother's lifeless body.

'...and if it does happen, you'll wail a lot for me because you can't live without me...'

His words resonated in my head. I let out a shaky breath.

"You —you're right Kelvin. I —I can't leave without you. I can't... don't do this to me, Kelvin. I'm sorry. Please wake up..."

Please.

The tears kept flowing freely as my entire body shook violently. I couldn't take my eyes off him.

He's still so young. He's just fifteen. He's too young...

What have I done? What have I done?

"I'm a monster. This is on me." I cried. Mucus ran down my nose, over my lips, and down my clothes and I didn't even care about them. I just kept crying and wailing.

"Kelvin please don't leave me too. Please Kelvin, not you too. I'm sorry. Please, Kelvin. I didn't even get to say sorry. Kelvin this is the worst punishment." I cried even more.

The migraine in my head only got stronger and my head started to feel heavy but I didn't care about my health. I just wanted my brother.

"Kelvin if you want I'll throw my poop perfume away. I'll —I'll let you change my girly wardrobe. I'll let you into my room. Just please... wake up. I'm sorry. Please just don't do this to me." I cried and pleaded at the same time.

Suddenly, his body came alive. He shot up and grabbed my left wrist inhumanely fast.

I screamed!

Bang! The seesaw hit the ground.

Whoosh whoosh! The merry-go-round span fast.

Zwing zwing! The swing span on its pole.

"Why ...why? Xena!" He questioned me in a harsh voice.

My eyes went wide with shock and I only shook my head vigorously.

Guilt was another thing munching at me.

'Twinkle twinkle little star...'

The sing-along stand came alive as well and the nursery rhyme kept playing in the background.

"WHY? WHY? XENA!" This time his voice was even harsher.

'...Mary had a little lamb, little lamb...'

"I —I Kel —I di—" I only stuttered.

My heart pounded the harshest it had ever pounded all my life while my head backed up my heart's pounding in form of a migraine. If Kelvin didn't kill me then I was going to die of a heart attack.

Either way, I was dying; that I was sure of.

"WHY XENA!" He screeched in my face.

'...up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky...'

At that moment, I could take it no more.

My heart stopped.

My vision blurred.

Sounds echoed in my head.

I blacked out.
