Chapter 1

Alexander was a regular, average, 14 year old kid. Busy with school, chores, and day-to-day activities. He lived with his mother and stepfather, Marissa and Lou. Alex was trying very hard to get used to life with this new man in the house; sleeping in their bedroom, eating at their table. But at least Lou wasn't trying to replace Alex's real father.

He remembered the last thing his dad said to him before he died.

"Alex. I want you to do one last thing for me." whispered Herrell Fox. He was lying on his old bed, chest covered in blood. Alexander looked at his father, tears flooding his silver-grey eyes. "I want you to take this old book of mine. You don't have to read it, I just want to die knowing it is in safe and worthy hands." He pointed to a shelf on the other side of the room. "I'll be sure to protect it with my life, dad." Alexander knew that whatever was in that book must have been vital to dad. And whatever was important to him is important to Alexander as well. That day, Herrell Fox breathed his last breath and passed on to a better place.

Alex wiped a stray tear from his eye. He looked at the clock. "Oh shoot! I must've gotten distracted." He said to himself. He was late to his music class! He snatched his clarinet case and sprinted down the old, oak staircase. "Honey! Don't forget your books!" Marissa waved the music books at Alexander. "Oh! Thanks mum, bye!!!" He hopped on his bike and pedalled away. "Be home by 7:30!" His mother added. She sighed. "It's almost as if things were back to normal…" she said quietly to herself, smiling softly at Lou, across the front lawn.

Alexander loved biking to his classes. Plus, it was very close to his house so he didn't take that long. As he arrived at the building, he immediately noticed something was off. He went off his bike and ran towards the small music school. "What happened?" He asked, genuinely curious. Professor Luciano, the music teacher, looked back at Alex, his pristine blue eyes full of sorrow. "The academy...is shutting down, Alexander Fox." Luciano smiled grimly as Alex's eyes widened in shock.
