The silence stretched on for forever, and Aiden started to feel faint. “Mum?” He tried to hide the way his voice wavered by clearing his throat.
“I’m not sure—where are you now?nrdquo;
His eyes stung, his throat contracted, and the brown stain he’d focused his gaze on swam together with the white of the wall.
“I’m in a place called Nortown, but the road is blocked and my car is stuck.” His voice fizzled to a whisper as he talked.
“Perhaps it’s better you turned around, then. The weather here is terrible, and it doesn’t look like it will ease any time soon.”
