Chapter Forty Nine: Progression

Jet walked from the shadows within the room of the one the Cathols called Their Lady.

He knew her from a mutual acquaintance as The Forsaken Alchemist, though he'd never seen her face since she wore a white hood at all times.

She spoke, her voice altered heavily by some device she wore at all times, "I told you to enter like a normal person, Jet."

Laughing mirthlessly, Jet said, "So says the Alchemist."

Irritation dripping from her voice, she responded, "I trust the first subject took the bait?"

"Like a chump," Jet responded happily.

"I admit, I was concerned when one of the Unclaimed's little band picked up the first device, but we were lucky that he was so easily manipulated," the Alchemist started. She continued, "We must be sure that no other surprises pop up, this has been too much work to let random chance disrupt us."

Jet shrugged and said, "Any chance of you telling me what's going on here?"

The Alchemist tapped her screen and said, "You? A contractor? No. If I had my way, you'd have been killed as soon as you lost the Nekoum girl, but apparently that's not an easy prospect when it comes to you."

Walking over to her desk, Jet said, "Hey, I helped with your other little side project, didn't I? I think we could call that even."

Images of the city flickered on screens all around her room as she said, "My master would have slaughtered you for even considering such a loss even."

Jet laughed loudly and said, "If your master could harm me, he'd have killed me long, long ago."

The Alchemist sighed exasperatedly and said, "At the very least you've kept Jevah's plan on track, even if you threw a wrench in my cogs."

Shrugging again, Jet said, "What can I say, I'm a good little church boy."

All of the screens zoomed in on an image of Trigger killing the people in the church several hours before and she said, "My master offered a solution that works for Jevah, but even I don't know what he's after."

Jet raised an eyebrow and said, "What everyone is after. Entertainment."

"We're not all you, necromancer."

"Aww, I thought we were on a first name basis, Forsaken," Jet said, chuckling as he finished.

Caressing a button on her desk, the Alchemist said, "I could have you ejected from this room forcefully, you know."

Glaring at her dangerously, Jet said, "There isn't a power in all of creation that could stop me from being somewhere I want to be."

Sighing softly, he said playfully, "But if I'm not wanted, I'll go."

Looking back at her notes, the Alchemist said, "Thank you."

Rolling his eyes, Jet stepped into the darkness at the edges of the room and disappeared as she said, "Idiot."
