23. The attack (2)

Just as the door opened, Miriam disappeared into thin air, leaving me to fend for myself. What a traitor?! Protect me my ass.

Kai came in and I heaved out a sigh of relief. I knew he wouldn't kill me since there was a bigger threat outside. He hurried towards me and grabbed my arm. He gripped it so tightly that it hurt.

" Let me go! " I screamed but he didn't listen to me. He dragged me out of my bedroom.

His white shirt was bloodied and so was his face and arm. It seemed that he had been fighting before coming to my bedroom. He looked like a man on a mission as he guided me away to the direction of his bedroom.

I heard a scream and I looked to see what was happening but Kai tugged my arm. What was his problem anyway? I swear he showed me he hated me every day since I asked about what he was discussing with the werewolves.

That was the point things changed.

" Where are you taking me?! " I screamed and tried to pull my hand from his grasp. He seemed distracted so I tugged harder and ran back in the direction of my room.

I did not get far because he lifted me off the ground and tried to carry me away. I kicked and thrashed. How could I be sure that he was not taking me to be killed?

" Stop being childish! " He shouted.

I scratched his arm with my nails and he hissed. I watched as the skin healed itself in less than a second. It was fascinating. We heard a howl and a wolf jumped towards us.

Kai threw me a distance away and I groaned at the force of impact. My head was even buzzing from the hit. I watched as he fought the wolf and I couldn't help but curse him out. Yes, he had protected me but he could have placed me on the ground gently.

I sounded ungrateful.

I watched as he single-handedly ripped the wolf to pieces using his vampire strength and speed. He used his hands and no weapons whatsoever. He had a few scratches but other than that, he was okay.

The scratches were already healing. I ran to him and asked him if he was fine but he ignored me and took my arm again. He led me to his room. I could see that he was struggling to walk properly because he hadn't fully healed but he was ignoring the pain.

" Are you going to kill me? " I asked with tears in my eyes. This was more bloodshed than I had seen in my entire life and it was overwhelming.

The castle was colored red. I could hear the sounds of pain and people ripping each other to pieces. Screams were also in the air. I couldn't help but feel sorry for the slaves that were down there amidst all the bloodshed.

" Do not be stupid! " Kai said and stood in his tracks.

Even in danger, he was still being rude to me. How original?

" I am trying to protect you but you are making this hard by crying bloody murder. Right now, you are not worth my time. If you cooperate, this can be pleasant. " He added before I could speak.

I snapped my mouth shut and let him lead me to his room. When we got there, he locked the door and let go of my hand. He removed the painting of me from the wall and it revealed a keypad.

I was shocked that he still had it up with Katana residing there. Was she not spooked by seeing me as she and Kai did the dirty?

I watched him enter some digits and the bricks of the wall separated to reveal a door. He unlocked the door and yanked me inside.

" Before he could speak, I heard a banging on his door. It was so strong that it shook the room, but didn't break the door. It sounded like someone had thrown their whole body against it. There was the sound of a cry of distress from a wolf.

The door had most probably injured him. Kai turned to me and looked me in the eye.

" Listen to me and do not argue because right now we don't have the time for that, "he said and assessed my face to see if I agreed.

I nodded my head slowly, agreeing with him.

" When I close this door, I want you to lock it from the inside. Do not leave unless I or Katana let you out. Do you understand? " He asked.

I nodded my head and he turned to leave. I could not help but worry for his safety. He was going to fight with the werewolves. What was the point of being a king if your subjects couldn't fight for you while you hid?

Men and their foolish egos.

I held his hand to stop him and he looked at the hand before looking at me. I opened my mouth but nothing came out. He looked impatient but he waited for me to say my words nonetheless. He finally got tired and went to close the door.

" Be careful! " I blurted.

He stopped and looked shocked for a while before smirking.

" I can take care of myself, little bird, " he said and closed the door before I could answer. I locked the door as he had instructed.

I sighed and leaned against the door. I was worried for him and I couldn't even understand why. The man had tried to kill me a few hours ago. I should have been wishing him dead but instead, I found myself whispering a prayer on his behalf.

I tried to press my ear against the door to see if I could hear anything but I discovered that the room was soundproof. There was only eerie silence. I switched on the light and climbed down the set of stairs so that I could get comfortable in his little hideout.

My painting had only been a distraction to what was on the other side of the door. People really did hide things in plain sight.

Creation is hard, cheer me up!
