21. Naïve

I was inside my covers reading a novel for a change. A lot was happening in Alexander's diary. I needed a little break. My thoughts were also revolving around whether I would ever get to leave my room again because I had not seen Athena since I blatantly lied to her face.

I had no brain capacity left to decipher Alexander's diary.

Zeus had heard of the incident and I was asking myself how but I knew I wouldn't get the answer to that question. He had left a purple flower and a note saying that he hoped I would get well soon.

In the note, he didn't lecture me about using the passage he had shown me. It felt like he already knew what I was going to do even before I did.

I blinked to get out of my thoughts. I had been staring at the same page for an hour or more. I groaned, the boredom getting to me. My head was even aching. At that moment, I wanted to stab myself.

Anything was better than what I was experiencing.

Just then, the door opened and Kai came in. As usual, he was barefoot. He was wearing a pair of sky-blue jeans that were soiled with paint. He also had on a shirt with the first few buttons open, showcasing his muscular tattooed chest. The shirt was also soiled with paint.

I peeled my eyes off him with great difficulty and looked somewhere else. That aura of darkness that he had filled the room. Even though I couldn't see him coming, I felt him coming closer.

My heart was beating fast against my chest. I was always scared of him and I couldn't figure out why. He was intimidating and unpredictable.

" How are you doing? " He asked.

I knew that he wasn't asking due to concern. It was just a formality. I nodded my head nonetheless.

He leaned into me and stroked my hair. Still, I refused to look at him. His movements were gentle but there was nothing calming about them. It felt like a moment of calm before the storm.

I was right.

" Tell me exactly what happened yesterday for you to end up this hurt, " he asked.

My heartbeat skyrocketed and I knew that he had already caught onto it due to his vampire hearing. I looked at him and saw that he was sporting a smirk. He got off on scaring people.

Sick bastard.

" Athena-" I started but he cut me off with a laugh that sounded like an evil cackle.

" You can lie to Athena and everyone else but don't think for a second that you can lie to me and get away with it. I have lived many many years and I have encountered the likes of you. " He said and I raised my eyebrow.

What did he mean by the likes of me? I was a good girl and I only had a few sins. I didn't consider lying a sin because it made the world go round. The world would be dead without lies and everyone knew it.

" What do you mean by that? " I asked, curiosity getting the best of me.

He leaned in closer so that his mouth hovered above my ear. I shivered and my eyes closed on their own accord.

" Girls like you look innocent and good. You convince yourself that you are faultless but deep down there is an evil so bad that it puts the likes of us to shame. Am I right, Lee? " He asked.

I pressed my teeth together and my eyes snapped open. How did he even know my nickname? As far as I knew, I hadn't shared it with anyone in the castle.

" You don't know anything about me, " I said quietly. It was the truth. He didn't know where I had come from and the things me and my sister had survived.

" Oh really? Do you know what I think? I think you are a fraud and you are a liar. You lied to Athena. I know there was no one chasing you and you know how I know all that? " He asked.

I refused to look at him or reply to him. He wasn't impressed because he grabbed my chin and forced me to look at him. I was angry at him so I did the unthinkable and spit on him. He chuckled at my behavior and gripped my neck tightly.

I tried to remove his hand from my grasp but it was fruitless. He had an iron grip on my neck and I was finding it very hard to breathe. My face grew hot and my body was begging for air. I tried to beg but my voice came out as a whimper. The look in his eyes told me that he aimed at killing me.

After what seemed like centuries, he released me and I coughed uncontrollably and rolled off my bed to get as far away from him as possible. He came to the other side of the bed and I backed away from him as I coughed.

I shook my head while begging him with my eyes not to kill me. He did the unthinkable and gave me a glass of water from my bedside table. I hesitated and looked at the glass skeptically but he was right in front of me in a second.

" Drink or I'll make you, " he said and I took it so quickly he smirked.

I was scared of him and that was what he had wanted. His eyes were cold and unforgiving. He could end your life with no remorse or without thinking twice.

" Next time you lie to me, remember this moment, " he said and started to leave. He did it slowly as if taunting me with his presence.

I glared at his back and waited for him to leave so I could finally breathe. His presence suffocated me. Once he was at the door, he turned to face me. I looked at him like I didn't know who he was.

Where was the Kai I had spent time with a few weeks ago?

" You're too naïve. The world is not roses and lilies. People only show you what they want you to see. Remember that, Lilith. "

The door closed and I heaved a sigh of relief. The word that was caught in a loop in my mind was the name, Lilith.

Why did everyone call me Lilith?
