17. Miriam ( That Bitch! )

My leg was shaking as I nervously waited for the slave who had told me she would ask who was bringing me breakfast. The prospect that I could have been seeing my own things was driving me crazy.

The door opened and I stood up quickly, expecting the slave to walk in. However, the person who entered shook me to the core. My heartbeat was picking up as Miriam entered and closed the door behind her. As usual, she had my tray of breakfast in her hands.

" Good morning, sunshine," she said while placing the tray on the bedside table.

I moved further away from her and hoped she wouldn't notice.

" Where were you yesterday? " I asked.

She looked scared for a second but then she hid it and chuckled nervously. I wanted to know what her answer would be.

" You see, I wasn't feeling that well so I rested, " she said and I fought the urge to scoff. Athena would rather die than let a slave rest. She was that heartless and soulless.

" Who are you? " I asked without beating around the bush. I just hoped that I wasn't digging my own grave.

Her face paled when she realized I had already discovered that she was a fake. She walked closer to me and I walked backwards. I gulped when I hit a wall. She was mere inches from me.

" I am not going to hurt you. I would never hurt you. " She said while coming closer. I held out my hand to stop her from coming any closer.

" Who the fuck are you! " I shouted even louder.

" If you calm down and sit on the bed, I can tell you. Please, you have to trust me. " She said and I shook my head violently.

Did she realize what she was asking me to do? Trust someone I didn't know?

She reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone. I gasped and put my hand on my mouth. Of course, I wanted a phone. I could call my sister and tell her I was okay. Not that she cared; she hated me.

I never understood why she hated me. Our parents died when I was three and she was twelve. She was obligated to take care of me so she resented me for it. According to her, I was problematic and ungrateful.

I pushed the bitter thoughts aside and stared at the phone. Was it even a real phone or was it all an imagination?

" What do you want from me? "I asked. Nothing in this world is free.

" You mean what do I want for you? " She stressed the word for.

She came closer to me despite my flinching. She held out her hand to hand me the phone. I hesitantly took it and pressed the on button. It came alive and I gasped. I couldn't help the joy that bubbled in my chest.

" Do you trust me now? "

I nodded my head even though I wasn't being sincere. We headed to my bed and sat down. I looked at her trying to figure out how she was able to come in through my door without the guard noticing her.

Then again, she looked like a slave.

" Who are you? " I asked again.

She sighed and held my shaky hands in hers. I was afraid of her. If she planned to kill me, she could easily succeed and no one would bat an eyelash. I couldn't even defend myself.

" That does not matter. All that matters is that I want to protect you. I am here to protect you. Relax because you can trust me. I know you do not have trust in me right now but I will earn it. I will help you escape from here. " She said with such conviction that it scared me.

There was nothing more scary than a person you didn't know promising to do something for you. It felt like she was obsessed with me. What was her endgame? What did she hope to achieve by helping me?

" It will take some time but in the meantime, you can prove to me that you are on my side," I said.

" I have some news for you. Think of this as the beginning of me proving my loyalty. Kai lied. " She said with zero hesitation.

I raised my eyebrow at her and wondered what she was talking about. Kai never told me enough to have lied to me.

" What did he lie about? " I asked, playing into her game like she wanted.

" Katana is not his sister. They are lovers and she is still at the mansion. They have had an on and off again relationship for centuries. " She revealed.

I didn't want to believe it but I had a feeling that it was true. That explained the way Katana had given me a sour look and how he had taken her to talk with the werewolves. It made perfect sense.

I had never hated Kai more. He was a liar and he was only being nice to me so that I would consent to sex with him. He was a disgusting man. Hot but disgusting.

Miriam eyed me to see my reaction but I made sure that my face revealed nothing. I did not ask how she knew that because I had a feeling she wouldn't tell me.

After a few minutes of silence, she excused herself and said she would come and visit me when she could. Again, I didn't ask what she did when she wasn't with me. It was none of my business.

With little luck, she would forget all about me.

I cursed myself for liking Kai over and over again. I hated myself for having a crush on him. All he ever wanted was to use me. It was a normal thing for vampires. All they loved doing was preying on human weakness.

The door opened pulling me out of my thoughts. I quickly hid my phone and turned to face the door. The slave who had promised to check who was bringing me breakfast came in.

She eyed the empty tray and then turned to look at me. I rolled my eyes because she had a thing against knocking. It was common courtesy to do so.

" No slave has been bringing you breakfast. Whenever they ask, they find that you have been cleared for breakfast. " She said.

I nodded my head because her news had come too late. Miriam and I had already spoken.

" Who brought you breakfast? " She asked.

" Don't worry about it. And please, let us keep all this to ourselves. " I said.

I knew it was a stretch and that she would blurb but one could only hope. After all, no one would believe it when she said that someone other than a slave was bringing me breakfast. All I had to do was say that it was her who had been bringing breakfast and she just was seeking attention.

It was a shitty thing to do but she would deserve it if she failed to keep her mouth shut.

Immediately after she left, I removed the phone and turned it on.

I opened the call log but I couldn't make the call. There was no service in the castle. Miriam must have known when she gave me the phone.

That bitch!
