A vagabond's ascent

Our protagonist is of the “vagabond” species. A pretty cool creature, but nothing compared to humans and their inventions. Humans can go eat my sawtooth branch. The world is constructed of floating island. Above and below is the “void” as all call it. Nobody has returned from the void yet, so they’re assumed dead. Are they really dead? Yeah, probably. Travel is hard - it requires flight, cause how else would you get between the floating islands? That means our protagonist’s species, the “vagabond” as I’ve established, can also fly.

(Death in) peace was never an option.

I raised my head upwards, waiting for the moment I die. Loud crashes anchored all around.. actually, no. They echoed behind me - that's where the island was splitting apart. Man, that's the opposite of a peaceful death.

...

"Umm, why is it taking so long? I'm not dead yeah, cause my head is still in pain, so what the hell is going on?" It's a been a good couple seconds, so I was more-less able to make out the details around me.

I crawled onto my knees and turned back around, only to be met by a violent splinter of rock coming from below. Puncturing through my chest, I was launched into the air along with the stone chunk. Earth was flying all around, as if being pushed by an invisible force-field; which isn't too far off from reality.

Watching my fall to the ground was scary, to say the least. I'd close my eyes, but the ground getting closer to me by the second got me entranced somehow.

"That's it." I smacked against the ground, barely surviving the impact.

Aargh, that hurt. Why didn't it kill me instantly. Fuuck me.

I patiently waited for the the next part of the island to shatter, talking me down along with it, but nothing seemed to be happening.

"You've gotta be kidding me with this." Using every last bit of my strength, I barely managed to sit upright and turn my head around to see the same scenery as the last time I turned around.

"Huh?" I couldn't tell what was going on anymore.

My ears were ringing so loudly that any noise was blocked out my it, so I had to trust my eyes. But, not gonna lie here, it looks like my eyes are deceiving me.

It just stopped? Just like that, in a matter of seconds, a beast powerful enough to be called a living cataclysm - the drift lens itself - just gave up?

It's not like the thing was trying anything in the first place, the island was in its way so it just rammed through it accidentally. It had no reason to stop.

Whatever, I don't have the energy to figure this out, lemme accept my fate and make the pain go away.

And with that, I closed my eyes to never wake up again.

~~~
Hello world! I survived. How, you ask? I've no clue.
Am I in pain? Why yes of course. Would I like to die? Yes please.
I released some steam from my eyes, something the vagabonds gotta do to cold down, and got up. Scanning the area around, I realized I was in the same area as before. My head.. It's kinda.. not in the best state, but hey, at least it functions.
Now I know I said I wanted to die, but shut up man. It was a hyperbole. Also, yes, I'm talking with my own thoughts, if that makes any sense. Well, no it clearly doesn't, but that's the only kind of communication I get, so I take what's given.
Anyways, looks like that dude I consumed had some concentrated blood, which has a way higher energy content compared to the normal one. I just didn't notice cause I was in such a rush. Makes me wonder if I'm some protagonist with plot armor.
Just kidding. Plot armor means you're lucky, and I'd describe myself as anything but that. To have to abandoned and to then meet wandering mirror in the same day: now that's what I call bad luck.
Hmm, but it makes you wonder.. what actually happened?
I walked up to the the edge of the island, which was now curved inwards, and had a good looks round. I see, I see. About a quarter of the island has been obliterated. Luckily enough, it was the part with the least wildlife - in other words food for myself -, so at least I can sustain myself for a little while.
But that can wait.
I looked down, but saw no clouds below.
"Did the island lose some heigh?" That sometimes happens. The altitude of islands can fluctuate a few hundred meters up or down, and it's easy to tell by looking at the clouds. If they're below, then you're higher. Above, therefore, means lower.
But, having looked up, I noticed there were no clouds above either.
If I throw something down I might be able tell how high or low I am by the wind current strength. I'm not as good as the Elders were, but I might gain some info from that.
A chunk of earth was barely hanging on to the island by a bunch of old tree roots. In a clean slice the roots were dismembered and the chunk of earth fell down - that's what I expected, anyways.
What ended up happening is nothing. The land stayed where it was, like it was sitting atop an invisible barrier.
"This is confusing beyond reason." I'm already feeling like an over-beaten dead horse, and now there's this thing to figure out..
This chapter may have confused some, but do not worry kind sir (or ma'am idk), cause the next one will explain it all.
