CHAPTER ONE•|A CHANGE.|

MARY POV.

Anxiety fueled my whole body as I stared at the mansion in front of me. Cold feet and sweaty palms, in one word I was nervous.

"Let's go inside, dear." I heard Maria say to me. We had both been standing, admiring the eerily quiet, vast lush mansion since the gate was remotely opened from the inside. I turned to look at her and she was also looking at me with concern evident in her eyes. She held me by my wrist, cupped my cheek with her other hand, telling me, "It's going to be okay dear."

A nervous smile made its way to my face as I heard Maria say those words to me. I believed her, I believed those words she'd said to me.

Maria was the closest thing I had to a family. I was born an orphan and was raised up by Maria who was said to have found me by the sewer. Although she was poor, she raised me, gave me food, with a little education, and because of that I was forever grateful towards her. Maria was practically my mother.

Holding my baggage tightly, I began to walk hand in hand with Maria towards the huge aristocratic mansion which I'd only seen in Disney fairytale cartoons.

The mansion was beautiful, and it couldn't be compared with the trailer house me and Maria lived in. The exquisite stately manorial building was drool worthy, and it had a colossal and pompous state of art water fountain at the center — a quaint ornate. The floor was appealing, and it looked like some sort of knockdown overlay. By the rear end of the compound there were five luxurious cars. Cars that I'd only seen in magazines; a Pagani Zonda Hp Barchetta — Which in my entire life I'd only ogled at through magazines, but it was right at my front at that moment. I knew that car was the most expensive car in the world with only limited pieces available, selling at a whopping 17.5 million dollars, a Rolls Royce Sweptail, a Lamborghini Veneno, a Bugatti and a sleek black Jeep.

The whole place stinked of excess money.

Also, a humongous tree which looked really old was by the rear end of the compound, and for some reason I found myself drawn to that tree.

Arriving at the lustrous old mahogany wooden door of the building, Maria let go of my wrist and knocked lightly on the door.

My heart began to beat in a gallop, I couldn't believe that I'd be working at a Mansion, though I knew not who I'd be working for.

Me being there at that moment was impromptu.

Just that morning, I was home, bored and rewatching my favourite Disney cartoon — Cinderella, daydreaming about the day that I would also meet my own Prince charming. Maria had come back from her daily outing and had told me to pack up my she'd stuffs becausefound a job that would change our lives forever. As usual I didn't argue and went to pack my load, and that was how I found myself at the magnificent mansion.

"Hello!" Maria yelled at the door, snapping me out of my reverie. I turned to look at her. She had her whole tooth showing as she grinned widely, the side of her eyes crinkled in excitement. Then I figured that whatever Job that she might have gotten for me must really be good. "Is anyone home?"

As she kept on knocking on the door, I said nothing, then I took a quick glance around the quiet compound and I couldn't help but ogle at the sight once again. I felt a tap on my shoulders and I took my gaze towards Maria who pointed towards the direction of the door.

"It's opened." She said.

I took my gaze forward and truly the door was opened, but no one was in sight. We didn't move an inch from the doorstep as we both stared into the sophisticated but quiet living room.

"Do you think we should go in?" I asked, unsure on what to do next. Maria didn't answer me anyways, so I turned to look at her and she was pressing her phone. "Are you trying to call someone?"

She turned her head to me and only nodded in response before placing her phone on her ear. "Hello, Mrs Peterson."

I faced my front, not bothering to pay attention to Maria as she conversed on the phone. I looked directly into the dimly lit beautiful and luxurious living room and I couldn't help but appreciate those who might have done the interior decorations.

"Let's go in, dear," Maria told me, leading the way and I trailed behind her, moving with light steps in order not to make a noise with my slip-on shoes, then I heard a loud bang from behind.

My eyes widened in fear as I whipped around quickly, jerking a gasp, so did Maria, but we saw it was the door which had closed back itself.

"God, that scared the shit out of me." With her shaky hand on her racing chest, and her prolonged sighing, I knew Maria was unquestionably scared. "Are you okay, Mary?"

I nodded and proceeded to calm Maria down, soothing my racing heart in sequence. After I'd helped Maria calm her racing heart and her shaky nerves, we continued to take our steps, halting next to a huge flower vase which was near the grandiose spiral staircase. I looked all around me but no one was in sight, and I looked at Maria who already had a smile on her face like she wasn't recently scared to shit. And since no one was in view I decided to ask her the question that had been bothering me since she said I should pack up my stuff that morning.

"Ma' Maria," I called out to her in a whisper-like tone. "Who am I going to be working for?"

She smiled before responding, "Darling Mary, trust me you'd be shocked when you know who your boss is."

"Really? Do I know them?"

"Yes Mary," She answered, the smile still present on her face. "Everyone in America knows him."

"Is he a celebrity?"

"Yes."
