Stigma

Me and Daisy formed a quick bond, like we new each other all along, she had the same music and movie taste as me. We exchanged movies and novels and she became not only my friend but the friend of my siblings. She became my closest acquaintance and we even started walking together for we enjoyed each others campany.

One day we were strolling across the shopping centre just chatting and laughing. I noticed that people were staring at us, I was used to them staring but this time it was different, their eyes looked as if they were warning me.

After escorting her to her home I came back and was about to finish reading one of my novels when I heard someone knocking faintly at the door, on opening the door I saw Komen, he was looking at me with a familiar gaze, "where had I seen that gaze?" I wondered, he told me there was something he wanted to tell me urgently. I became anxious for I didn't know what he was about say, his shaking voice made the situation even worse. He tried to open his mouth but it was like his jaws were heavy.

Then he gained courage and he managed to speak, "stop seeing that girl," he said "you are spoiling your father's image." That is when it dawned to me, that familiar look he had was the same with that of those people staring at me across the shopping centre."How was I spoiling my father's image?" I could not even imagine any reason for I knew my father. He wasn't a megalomaniac who thought that a relationship with a girl is forbidden, so I could not understand.

Komen's words left me in deep thoughts. He hadn't managed to explain further, all he said was, " it's not just your father's image, am saving your life brother", later on I learned from Susan our house help that there was a rumour in the village stating that Daisy was born positive with the HIV virus, at first I couldn't handle the news, the only person I could talk to was Kevin, despite being younger than me he was wiser, he always viewed life in a logical manner. "If you really have feelings for her you won't take the words of other people, and if she really has feelings for you, she'll tell you the truth her self", thats all he said.

Daisy continued coming to our home as I went to theirs, our friendship blossomed despite the ominous admonitions from Komen, Susan and other people. After all we weren't doing anything wrong, we were just friends. My aloof nature made the people of Kirinyaga wonder about my mentality. They were used to people deserting after hearing the news but it didn't matter to me. That raised a sense of jealousy that was hidden inside them for ages.
