Seeing an ancient city from a magical window is one thing, but actually being there? A different thing entirely. After driving a couple of hours from Lagos, we pull up to Osun state in which the ancient city lies. It’s been less than an hour driving through the city and I am already impressed by seeing Ile Ife’s massive stone buildings and semicircular courtyards. But what really caught my eyes were the sculptures. The huge heads made out of bronze and other pottery that adorned the city squares seemed so detailed and realistic. I am not quite sure what purpose they served, whether to revere gods, ancestors or ancient rulers. Now that I think about it, it seems kinda quirky knowing that these people worship my dad. I’m not saying I doubt their power... but let’s just say my old man didn’t exactly strike me as the pure and merciful type of god.
