Lensa sobbed into my shoulder as the guards sauntered away victoriously.

"I'm sorry," Pelleas breathed. "I should have gotten here sooner, I should have known they were here. I should have–"

"Stop," I cut him off. "There is nothing you could have done short of slaughtering them in the middle of the street."

"Maybe I should have. It would mean a few less loyalists to the Throne."

I had never heard Pelleas speak so bluntly, especially considering Lensa was with us, listening. He looked tortured and I couldn't help but feel some level of guilt. This was all because of his involvement with me. If it wasn't for me, he'd probably be at his home or at the barracks, none the wiser.

"I'm sorry," I said to both of them. Lensa sniffed and stepped away from me, attempting to correct her robes. Pelleas glared down at me from where he stood just a couple of feet away.
