The beginning

Udin live with his grandparents after his parents died in a car accident seven years ago. He is an only child.

Every morning since he moved to his grandparents house he will sit on the front stairs of their house and watch the sun rise.

First time he saw the scene it really excited him to the point that he dragged his grandmother there shouting.

"What is that round orange thing that hanging on the sky?" He keep pointing his finger at the sun while jumping up and down.

"It's the sun" "Why is it so big?" "I guess it's just as it is always" reply his grandmother smiling.

Since that day it become his habit to watch the sun rise. Unless it's school days.

That village is on a high terrain.

At the back of the house there is a mountain. The mountain is named Gunung Tok Nenek.

It's mean grandparents in Malay language.

His grandparents own durian orchard near the mountainside. In the orchard flow a small stream.

It's a slow pace of life here. After all it a live in rural area.

He love to follow his grandfather going to the orchard either to tend the durian trees or just fishing in the stream.

Udin developed trauma since the day of that accident. He was the only survivor.

His concern grandparents watch closely over that small boy. Quietly they would shed tears of sadness thinking about his fate.

Sometimes during night he would scream in his sleep. Other time he was crying. More like to shouting.

The doctor that tend to Udin said it was because of that incident. He need support and love in order to overcome this condition.

"Doctor do you think his condition will approve?"

Asked Pak Samad his grandfather. "It's lucky that he still young. Given time his condition will improve." Doctor Rizal reply.

For the first year living at Kampung Batu Bukit Udin really an introvert kid. He in kindergarten at that times and spend half of the year recovering.

He still can not adjusted to his new surrounding.

His grandfather call as Guru Tua because he teach silat. Silat is a combative art of self defence. He really respected by the villagers. Every day after asar prayer time Pak Samad would teach silat in gelanggang silat near his house.

At first Udin would just stand at the fence and just watch. After a few days he sit on the bench in the gelanggang area.

After one week he stand at the back of other students and try to mimic what they do.

Pak Samad feel proud of Udin because he was the youngest students there. He was only seven years old at that time.

Now Udin in form one. His result for UPSR really outstanding. He did not want to go to any boarding school because he want to stay with his grandparents.

And the story here not about his school or his silat. But it's about that mountain.

Udin full name is Muhammad Salahudin Bin Muhammad Ayub. He was named Salahuddin according to the great warrior Salahuddin Al Ayubi. His grandmother Mak Saodah always feel uneasy for him. First because of his appearance. Even though he was involved in an accident he did not have any scars. His was a handsome boy and looked more mature than his age.

There is a superstition that the bunian that live in the mountain will take a human without a scar. Not everyone believe that tale. After all it's more to old tale or folklore that nobody cares.

"Abang! Please don't bring Udin to the Orchard any more." One day Mak Saodah said to Pak Samad.

"Why? What's wrong Odah?

"I don't know, I feel bad about it."

"Odah! I know that you always worried about him but there is really nothing to worry about. "

"Our Orchard is a safe place. We are not entering the jungle or the mountain."

"Don't you dare bringing him into the mountain." Suddenly Mak Saodah warning Pak Samad.

They stopped talking about it when Udin reached the dining table.

Udin eat a lot that night because his grandmother cooked his favourite dish sambal hitam.

Gelanggang silat- the area for pesilat to train and practice silat.

Guru Tua - the instructor of silat.

Abang - it means brother but here it means the same as dear or honey.

Bunian - the supernatural being that been believe is a type of jinn. Human can not see this supernatural being. They are believed to inhabit areas of forests, mountains and the sea. Sometimes human can see them when they choose to appear in front of human. Or when human goes into their place. That's the belief of the locals.

UPSR - primary school achievement test.

In Malaysia kid in form one usually age thirteen years old or fourteen years old. Fourteen years old if the kid are from other type of school than kebangsaan because they need to attend one year transition class.

Sambal hitam - a dish from Pahang state.
