Chapter 13

Irina came home during Roxie’s solo song. “Ah, Chicago,” she said, dropping her bag and sliding straight into a seamless tap dance, perfectly in time with the music. “Roxie!” she sang, as Daniel applauded and whistled.

Sasha clapped too, so happy to be among his friends tonight.

Irina didn’t seem at all surprised that Sasha was hanging out in the apartment with Daniel, but he did notice her noticing his suitcase in the corner.

“Leaving soon?” she asked, when Daniel was in the bathroom.

Sasha nodded. “Tomorrow.”

Irina frowned, then went to fetch glasses and the vodka. “A toast for your safe trip,” she said, pouring out vodka for them.

Sasha smiled, touched at the sentiment, and accepted the drink. They toasted in Russian, and after knocking back the vodka, Irina poured again.

“A toast to you and Daniel,” she said with a knowing smirk.

Sasha felt his face flush, but he smiled back and toasted with her.
