“They’re working on a plan now.” The lie rolled easily off Nick’s lips, smooth enough that John might have believed it if he hadn’t caught the fear in Nick’s eyes. “They sent me in to see how your friend was doing.”

John sat on his heels, careful not to knock his shoulders into the wall of debris. He exhaled, slow and deep while he pulled back in on himself.

“He’s not good.” The adrenaline spiked by Nick’s arrival drained away, leaving his voice weary. “His right arm is trapped. I tried, but I can’t free him.” John hated the defeat underlying his words. “I don’t know what to do next.”

Nick pulled his glasses out of his pocket and put them on. “Let’s start by taking a look.”

Whatever uncertainty Nick had, he hid behind his calm and assured tone. John admired the strength that took and for the first time since he realized he couldn’t free Dean, a renewed sense of purpose settled within. He had to get them out. He would get them out. All three of them. 15
