The Last German Princess LouisThe last princess of Germany, Princess Louis (Princess Victoria Louise), was the youngest child of William II and Queen Augusta Victoria. She was born in Potsdam on September 13, 1892. She had six older brothers. As the only princess of the king and his wife, she had been doted on since she was young. She was smart and elegant, but because she had been spoiled since childhood and inherited part of her father's personality, she was somewhat domineering and liked to be the center of attention.
In 1912, when she was just 20 years old, she met Prince Ernst Auguste (grandson of the last king of Hanover, Georg V) at a banquet in Berlin. The two fell in love at first sight and decided to get married. However, Prussians had annexed Hanover, and there was a complicated relationship between the two royal families, so her parents opposed the marriage. However, she insisted that she would not marry unless it was Prince Ernst. In the end, her parents could not persuade her and married them in May 1913. This was the grandest and most luxurious royal event in Europe before the outbreak of World War I. Prince Ernst and his father gave up their claim to the Kingdom of Hanover and the Duchy of Brunswick. On November 1, Prince Ernst inherited the Duchy of Brunswick and became a duke and a colonel of the Prussian Cavalry. The two families reached a kind of reconciliation.
After the marriage, the couple moved into Brunswick Castle, the capital of Brunswick, and had five children (four sons and one daughter). However, only one year after their marriage, World War I broke out. In 1918, Germany was defeated, Wilhelm II abdicated, and the royal family members went into exile. Prince Entus, as the leader of the Hanover family, had lived with her in many places. After Prince Ernst's death in 1953, Princess Louise moved back to Brunswick in her later years and died at the end of 1980. She had also published several books and biographies, such as Life as the Emperor's Daughter.
