Not a comprehensive review. I hope this will settle the issue about the perceived racist views of the author and Chinese people. The author based off the novel from historical periods. Specifically - though I have no idea whether this is exact - I note matchinng political themes surrounding both the Taiping ********* and the Opium Wars of the mid 1850s. The reason you see foreigners described as devils is because of the destructive ways the British and other traders would exploit the weakness of Chinese society by cultivating a dependence on opium. The effect was similar to the Demons in the story actually 'consuming' the Chinese. There are accounts of Chinese villages in the era that were facing hunger due to food shortages yet would reserve Opium kiosks to fuel opium addiction. The Taiping ********* is self-explanatory! The Heavenly Kingdom in the story and earlier Demonic Churches were reflected in both the Taiping ********* and the An Lushan *********; two sessions of Chinese civil wars that were the most destructive seen by any measure of modern or antique history. The winged demons that plagued lower level fighters? Those were the European clippers and naval warships that were so much faster than the Chinese navy. The whole farming arc where ZT improved the food situation was the famine that the era saw. The mid 1850s was especially troubling for the Qing dynasty due to a series of natural disasters similar to what were experienced during the twilight period of the Tang Dynasty in the early 900s. Infact, I highly suspect that the earlier Demon Wars are a reference to the Tang Dynasty period's troubles with the An Lushann *********. As to demons in other countries? I see this as the series of wars the mid 1800s saw such as the American Civil War that was the 'Western Continent' in the novel. Personally, the author was brilliant in crafting this story. Sure, the hatefulness of foreigners in the story appears exaggerated, but any serious student of history ought kow how badly foreigners appear to have behaved in many a nation. In any case, given parallels to actual history, does anyone feel the depictions are wrong? Remember, the author must have kown he would face these accusations from the earliest thus his relationships with many non-Han wives. So guys, appreciate this most awesomest of novels and give it a good look-over.
