At nineteen, Ellen Hart is a prodigy—a scholarship winner, a genius with a future brighter than most. But her life is shattered when she is kidnapped, raped, and left broken. Nine months later, she gives birth to her rapist's son, Caesar. Overwhelmed by trauma and unable to love the child who embodies her violation, she tries to drown him in a public washroom. Daniel Adolphis, a passing businessman, stops her—and is stabbed twice for his heroism. He survives just long enough to adopt Caesar before dying from his wounds.
Ellen is convicted and spends forty years in prison. At fifty-nine, she is released, a hollow shell of the brilliant girl she once was. Hours later, she dies in a sudden earthquake—or so the world believes.
But death is not the end. Ellen awakens in a surreal realm, falling through impossible worlds of inverted trees, suspended swords, and suffocating fog. She encounters a ten-headed beast that swallows her whole, only to deliver her into a crimson world of blood-red roses and glass statues. There, she meets the Watcher—a mysterious, godlike figure who knows her full name, including the "Z" she never understood.
The Watcher reveals that Ellen's trauma, her crime, and her survival are all connected. He offers her a choice: enter a gate to reclaim the buried truth of what happened to her, or remain frozen in ignorance forever. Ellen chooses to face the truth—whatever it may be.
Ngl, i was worried about how this would turn out BUT am glad to say this is a diamond in the rough. Theres a few things that are rough around the edges but the plot and the MC himself definitely make up for it. I have no words to really say except READ this. (Especially if you enjoyed beastars) (Ive literally never seen a beastars novel, and I WILL SAY you’re killing it so far author)
