Harry had seen dementors in Lupin's class, and Hermione had joined Snape's werewolf history class. Harry had been injured by a dementor in midair during a Quidditch match, and he wanted to learn from Lupin how to get rid of the dementor.
Later, when Harry obtained the Marauder's Map, he overheard Professor McGonagall saying that Sirius had been close friends with Harry's parents and Lupin but had betrayed them, told Voldemort where Harry's parents were hiding, and killed and destroyed Pettigrew, who was Harry's godfather, before Sirius escaped. But then Pettigrew's footprints appeared on the Marauder's Map.
