A Rant/Discussion of Merit Objectively, Deluxe Merit is broken. So far, we've heard of a few ways to get it: Doing overwhelmingly good deeds in this life or a past life, finding it and fighting over it like was implied at the first reveal, or by just having ungodly amounts of power/cultivation, even unknowingly, like the MC did. It is implied that the reincarnation system was broken until a couple of chapters ago, but if Merit passes between reincarnations, then there are random people born with this broken power and no understanding of how to use it. The statement from the last chapter about having to have saved the world in a previous life brings up more issues, such as wether or not the supply of Merit is limited or not, conflicting with the statement in the chapter where the MC acquired "the entire world's" supply of merit to become a Deluxe Merit Saint. If multiple people perform such world-saving acts, does the person who saved the world later take some of the first persons Merit? Does more Merit spontaneously generate for the second savior? If the supply is limited, then even people waiting to reincarnate or the Saints sealed in the Heavenly Palace would lose merit as living people acquired it, and if more is generated, then our river of souls waiting to reincarnate could possess enough merit to directly turn people into Deluxe Merit Saints - after all, it is implied that at least a hundred thousand years could have passed since the Acheron stopped flowing. And every deluxe merit saint has to be known and tracked from the perspective of an enemy - after all, as we've seen repeatedly, to attack one in even the slightest of ways (ruffling MC's hair with a blocked wind attack) is to invite the world to punish you. The world's retribution also scales with the strength of the offense, as well as (presumably) the difficulty of attacking the offender. From events of past chapters, I'm assuming that an "offense" towards a Deluxe Merit Saint is anything that affects the state of the Deluxe Merit Saint without their permission, approval, or knowledge - after all, MC probably wouldn't care about wind that is just the breath of an animal flying by his cloud, indistinguishable from normal wind. This definition of offense is worsened when you consider that reincarnated people generally have their memories wiped, so any attack on any civilian center can turn into a death sentence for the attacker with zero warning. Assuming that the Merit does not reinforce the body in any way, ignoring the fact that MC got the Merit from a body cultivation manual, then a viable strategy to deal with newfound or newly reincarnated Deluxe Merit Saints could be to have orphaned demons of a reasonable power kill them before the world can retaliate, so that retribution is limited to them and the Merit user is sent back to the reincarnation cycle. However, Saints like those in the Heavenly Palace or the Underworld would be nearly impossible to kill, as you need someone as strong as or stronger than a Saint to even harm them before the Merit retaliates. This is, of course, assuming that the world can only retaliate against the direct offender to the Deluxe Merit Saint and not any organizations behind them or their bloodlines, which it probably could depending on the severity of the offense. I'm honestly surprised that some Saint like the one in charge of the Underworld hasn't decided to have a bunch of people commit good deeds and then take their merit, like it was implied MC did and Other Saints can do, to empower themselves to the point where they become like the MC - after all, there seems to be no prerequisite of a good deed if you're taking it from someone else, which raises the question of if taking Merit counts as an offense to the Deluxe Merit Saint. In conclusion, this power is stupidly broken, and until more specifics are revealed, hopefully soon, I'm sticking with that.
