The nine-tailed fox originated from the totem worship of primitive tribes. Its image was first recorded in the Classic of Mountains and Seas." There is a beast in the mountains of Qingqiu. It looks like a fox but has nine tails. Its voice is like that of a baby. It can eat people but not poison them." The Nine-Tailed Fox Clan was like the royal family in the Qing Qiu Kingdom. They were originally a proud and mysterious race. During the pre-Qin period, they were auspicious objects. When they appeared together with the Queen Mother of the West, it meant that their descendants were prosperous. Later on, there were many changes in the myths and legends, such as being ordered by Nüwa to transform into Daji to cause chaos in the Shang Dynasty. In different dynasties, its image changed constantly. In the Han Dynasty, its auspicious meaning and the prosperity of its descendants developed. In the Tang Dynasty, the worship of the heavenly fox became a demon after it became popular. In the Song Dynasty, it became a demon. In the Yuan Dynasty, the image of the demon was further strengthened. In the Ming Dynasty, it referred to a lascivious woman. In the Qing Dynasty, its meaning hovered between auspicious and demon, and there was a characteristic of personification. The nine-tailed fox also had two big families, Tushan and Qingqiu. Tushan's nine-tails were related to Yu the Great's flood control, symbolizing power and justice. In modern works, the image of the nine-tailed fox was given more meaning.
