The book surely is a good read. Like seriously, it may not be my perfect cup of tea but it's worth the time and stones. Regarding the racism, I'm a naturally tan-skinned asian and I never felt offended nor found it offending. After reading the reviews I thought on it a lot, maybe because people have different perspectives that they understand things differently from others, I kind of understand TX's dislike when she first saw her skin. We live near the beach to the extent that we go swimming everyday since we were little and I'd always go home a little annoyed at my 'burnt' skin. In tropical countries, when you live an impoverished life in the province, people care less about their skin so I think that's what happened to the real Xiao Rou. 'Burnt' unhealthy skin looks very different from natural tan or dark skin. Strictly speaking, no matter the skin tone, as long as the skin is tended and healthy, it will always look beautiful.
