I really tried to like this story, but the flaws were just too glaring and repetitive. The story itself isn't bad, but there were 2 issues that absolutely ruined it for me, mainly because of how repetitive they were (SPOILERS AHEAD). 1- Entire chapters of some generic characters playing 1 or 2 games. That by itself wouldn't be a problem... If it didn't happen so often and for little to no reason. Showing the reactions to amazing, genre defining games is expected, but who the hell wants to read an entire chapter about the reaction of Sakaki to an "easter egg" of Final Fight. And said "easter egg" leads us into the second issue. 2- Zabo-man. I absolutely hated this character. Not because Zaboru decided to put his own little character in his games, that would be fine, but because he kept showing up too much and altering the gameplay. As far as I know, easter eggs are suposed to be HARD TO FIND SECRETS put in games for a variety of reasons, often being used to make true gamers feel good about themselves for actually being able to find it. Yet the secret here is basically being given away with those little cards, so it's not much of an easter egg. Also, the fact it exists in EVERY game basically takes away the secret aspect, as it's expected. Really, the fact Zabo-man shows up so much and in such an intrusive way to the games is the biggest issue, and it actually felt like attention seeking on the main character's part (with entire chapters dedicated to Zabo-man appearing), also coming off as a bit skeevy since he's basically stealing the games from our world. This story had a lot of potential, but there's only so much of Zabo-man messing with the good old games that I could take.
