This story is a fucking riot to read. I’m a tough critic, and some sections are a bit repetitive. Yet, when some of the jokes fall like the hammer of god I can’t help but screenshot them for another day to cure my eye bleeding from trying to read some of the xinxia crap out there. Super power exist, but they are rare and have obvious limitations so no cultivation. Guns and monsters are the main forces, but powers are growing. People actually die. Instead, the tropes died after being sold for potatoes to earn gratitude.** The world is based around an apocalyptic world where humans reside in walled strongholds, except the poor labor in refugee camps outside the walls. Yet, the protagonist isn’t defending the strongholds like a normal novel hero. The MC is a refugee, and through crazy plot lines ends up inadvertently destroying most of them he comes across. There are supernatural beings with a single superpower, while the rest of the world relies on guns and artillery to keep the monsters at bay. The MC’s unique power is to trade the gratitude of others for various services. The MC who is a total lone wolf slowly progresses as he shamelessly tries to get enough gratitude for the next hidden service. The author manages to build a desolate, hardscrabble world and still create crazy humor without destroying it. There are truly serious moments, major side characters die, supernatural beings die, entire nation state business consortiums die, even a fucking mountain dies in the course of the novel but you can’t help but feel the chain of events makes sense, though a crazy kind of sense this author has.

The theme of displacement is very common. People are forced to leave their familiar places and move to unknown lands. This is not just a physical displacement but also a cultural one. They have to adapt to new cultures, languages, and social norms. Fear is also a big theme. Fear of persecution, war, or violence that made them flee in the first place, and also the fear of the unknown during their journey and in the new place. And finally, resilience is a theme. Many refugees show amazing resilience in the face of so many difficulties and keep striving for a normal life.
