I had the tiniest hope, coming into this, that the story would not, in fact, be nauseatingly ableist. I thought that, because only the villains were using the word "cripple" at first that this could be a positive story, that didn't just do the easy thing. I was wrong. This story is just awful in how ableist it is. Somehow, we go from the Don merely being in a wheelchair (apparently a horrifying prospect for any self-respecting woman) to the fact that he has a leg injury must surely also mean he's intellectually disabled, and impotent as well. Heaven forbid a man in a wheelchair be smart or cogent or sexually healthy. And of course, it all turns out that - surprise! - he was faking it all along! A strong, competent man like him could not possibly be a wheelchair user. How silly. This would be such a better story if he remained a wheelchair user whilst also getting to be badass. Unfortunately, instead we get this.
