Volume 1 of Zaregoto by Nisio Isin is a really interesting start to the series. It feels like a classic locked room mystery at first, but it slowly turns into something more self aware and psychological. The conversations are sharp and sometimes long, but they are where most of the meaning is. The book plays a lot with themes like identity, talent, isolation, and the idea of truth versus perspective. It is less about the murder itself and more about the people involved. I will say I spoiled myself completely before finishing, and that probably took away from the impact. A lot of the tension depends on not knowing certain twists, so going in already aware of them made some reveals feel softer than they should have. Even with that, I still enjoyed the characters and the atmosphere a lot. Overall I would give it a solid score, but I feel like it would have hit harder if I had gone in blind.
