The story started off moderately well. At first, its creative liberties were tolerable, but later it drifted too far from canon without clearly stating it was an AU or properly justifying its changes. The problem is not that it changes things, but that it often seems not to understand how Westeros works. Tarth is treated like a minor, insignificant house, even though it is still a noble house with its own island, castle, lineage, and regional importance. On top of that, the island is presented almost like a tiny place that can be crossed easily, which artificially reduces its scale and affects the logic of travel, defense, population, trade, resources, and large projects. The most contradictory part is that the story downplays Tarth when convenient, but then gives it enormous resources and massive projects. Recruiting people from King’s Landing can make sense up to a point, but building a wall around the entire island, moving resources on that scale, or managing tens of thousands of workers and soldiers is not something a vassal house could do casually. In a medieval context, that would require years, generations, or a very strong justification. The same issue applies to military power. When the story starts talking about 20,000 soldiers for a single house, Tarth stops feeling like a strong noble house and starts feeling like a power capable of rivaling an entire kingdom. If that were true, it would completely change its relationship with the Baratheons, the Crown, and the other houses. The family aspect is also poorly handled. Selwyn lost three of his four children, with only Brienne surviving into adulthood, so adding another child to the family should not feel like a minor detail. A new heir born after so many losses would carry enormous emotional weight, especially for Selwyn, but the novel does not really explore that. There is also something forced about giving the protagonist a mother with Valyrian roots just to justify his typical “special character” appearance, while Brienne is still treated as simply ugly. There was room to invent things about Brienne’s mother, but it needed to be integrated better instead of feeling like a convenient excuse. Another weak point is the absurd level of authority given to the protagonist when he is only six years old. No matter how intelligent he is, Westeros is a feudal, traditionalist, and superstitious society. Adults would more likely see him as a strange, spoiled, or unsettling child, not as someone nobles, soldiers, and servants obey without question. The novel also gets Brienne’s age wrong, which damages the timeline. In a story that uses canon characters, those kinds of mistakes are not small because they affect relationships, events, and overall coherence. After a certain point, the quality drops quite a bit. The dialogue becomes repetitive, artificial, and strange. The characters stop sounding like real people, and the protagonist ends up feeling like a droid repeating the same ideas over and over again. In summary, the story does not fail because it changes canon. It fails because it breaks too many things without acknowledging them or handling them properly: the scale of Tarth, the status of the house, Selwyn’s family, Brienne’s age, feudal logic, construction timelines, exaggerated military numbers, and the natural flow of dialogue. As a declared AU, it might be easier to accept, but when presented as a story close to canon, it ends up feeling forced, incoherent, and increasingly artificial.

Arya Stark and Brienne of Tarth Fanfic: What are some interesting storylines?

A possible story could be about Brienne teaching Arya more about the code of chivalry. Since Arya has her own sense of justice, it would be fascinating to see how she interprets and perhaps adapts Brienne's teachings. For example, they could be in a situation where they have to protect a group of villagers, and Brienne shows Arya how to do it in a 'chivalrous' way, while Arya might come up with some unorthodox but effective methods as well.
