My main issue here was how inconsistent the system is. In most novels, there's always another mission to complete, when you have this type of system. In this novel, once he completes a mission, the system gives him his reward and then just stops communicating until it randomly issues another mission at some point in the distant future. It just rankles me.

LIKEImo this type of system is better (in a cultivation setting). Rather than MC just doing quest after quest like in an RPG, he generally cultivates normally. I think a constant system works best in a world like solo leveling, with different objectives. That way, the quest is to adventure and challenge himself.
It's not a very good choice for this type of plot, though. If everything revolves around using the system to grow stronger, then the plot just grinds to a halt whenever the system is inactive.

To the contrary, whenever MC gets a quest, he just does it. It's only when he can't do a quest that he leaves his hiding hole and goes out into the world. Besides, he still makes progress without the system, his progress is just slow. But I can understand what you mean. We know that his system is capable of allowing MC to advance much faster, making the tiny amounts of progress he has in between missions feel insignificant. And that's a valid criticism.

Took 100 years to advance to foundation. Seems like he has a poor talent. So it's logically consistent that without the system, he advances slow. Will read this novel just on this reason alone
