just curious, which trails is this based on, is it the Legend of Heroes: Trails games or something else?

It is one of the most popular Japanese RPG (Role-playing game). Just search it on google Legend of heroes: trails series. Trails = Kiseki in Japanese. If you haven't played it and an avid fan of RPG, I'd highly recommend to play it from the very first kiseki series.
