This novel began so promising. So very promising. However the inconsistent characterisation ruins this novel. The protagonist thinking doesn't reflect his actions at all. An example is from chapter 24: the protagonist recounts experience from his previous life (as part of the special operation forces) about how dangerous women are, and the very next minute he says he can't bring himself to hurt women. Who is this women he can't bring himself to hurt you may ask? Someone who was out to assassinate him. The story also has another problem. The 'last will of the original host' affecting the protagonist. This leads to all sorts of iffy results. The protagonist finds himself obsessed with a cunning, manipulative, women. It doesn't take a genius to figure out she's going to cause the protagonist an awful lot of trouble in the future. If all of this wasn't enough, the author has the gall to gloat in the author's note about how realistic his portrayal of male/female dynamics was for the time period (High Middle Ages; onset of William the Bastard's invasion of England). Alt-history novels have no middle ground, they're either incredibly good or incredibly bad. This one is the latter.

Interesting review, but I'm, tired of people misinterpreting paragraphs. I've looked through chapter 24 to see what you're referencing and what Ragnar said was: "It was truly hard to be harsh to women." And that is true.....what sane man enjoys hurting women? Now as for the second part, The last will of the original host was to create his own destiny rather than be at the beck and call of someone else. Right now, Ragnar is still under the tutelage of his father. Eve being in his life means nothing to him, he is neither obsessed nor in love with Eve. He hasn't married her, nor professed his love to her. He understands that she's useful due to a developed spy network and keeps her around due to it. Sigh, please point out in which chapter I've made the claim of male and female dynamics and I'll check it out to let you know what you misinterpreted. Cheers for the review, I haven't deleted this, but this is the second review that hasn't showed up on my reviews section. The previous one was a positive one as well. Might want to copy paste this into a new review so it's visible.
