Captivated from the start of chapter 1. The opening gave me the same vibe as a monologue from a well done Japanese slice of life anime, the kind with the monochrome background and the kanji trailing down the screen like a haiku. It's not an easy read emotionally. This is a dark novel that sounds like a collection of life experiences, with introspective gems throughout the entire journey it takes its readers on. It's a heavy read but in a good way, the kind that makes readers think deeply about the value of life and their self-worth as a human being. The subject matter hits close to home for me, personally, because it deals with depression and that's the branch of medicine I'm hoping to specialise in in the future. One thing I noted was the author's amazing ability to write realistic emotions. He described depression in an insightful way and one that I can see in the patients I've worked with. So for me, this was a huge plus. The writing itself is a mix of stream of consciousness and some parts even loosen into free form poetry. It's still being edited at the moment but I have high hopes for it because it's so beautiful. Lastly, a lot of the anecdotes that pepper the story are very relatable for the average reader. There are many references to incidents at school, which I think all of us would have experienced at some point in our lives, whether as actual participants or as bystanders. Would recommend, especially if you're looking for a philosophical read when it's raining out side and you're having your first morning coffee.
