Well this is another of the racist novels on here. The story itself is decent but it plays HARD into the whole idea that foreigners are all evil. Never trust them. Seriously, they may have been part of the empire for generations but they can never hold any position of worth because you know they are evil. This is the main character's view unscripted and unprovoked that receives perfect recommendations from everyone for how wonderful of a view it is. Yea. I am done. A pity as it was relatively promising up until the Imperial Examination and the unrelenting racism/nationalism.

I'm pretty sure you didn't even read that part properly, it's like you focused on just that one part like the others. Did you even read what he said right after? He literally said facts that could quite possibly happen, heck, it even happened. So get your mind straight, and don't read things with an obvious bias.

Wow. I ... Okay. So. The prince orders his subordinates to find fault with a paper. Somehow, they can't because racism is just so perfect. Literally NO other position ever considered in the entirety of human history has been without dispute and naysayers. Philosophy, religion, masterpieces of literature, you name it. Every single one had contemporary naysayers. But the MC's essay written in an hour? Now that is perfection. And it just so HAPPENS that this perfect essay is about how awful it would be to have an open society and how important it is to opress anyone that is of a different ethnicity from yours. Not long later there is a caricature of foreign people, a foreigner general who is a sociopathic killer who just loves torturing the domestic students. There to show how evil and bad foreigners are. To justify his view even though it makes zero sense for many reasons. I am sorry. No. This is racist. I don't care if the author tries to cover it ever so slightly with a justification that holds up to no scrutiny. In a different world, when China tried to do something half heartedly about not being totally closed off, it back fired. So every time, no matter the context, the same thing will happen because foreigners are bad. This is the Chinese party line. In spite of so many countries around the world proving over and over again why this is wrong both in terms of the historical facts and in terms of how it is being applied to policy. But hey you want to pretend racism isn't? Go ahead.

If you want to know, the author was most probably inspired by Chinese history, precisely the end of the Tang Dynasty Era where foreigners occupied all the high-ranked positions in the military. The result was the end of the Tang Dynasty due to corruption and betrayal. So yeah, this isn't racism. It's just a reality that happened. Still, people like you who call out to racism anytime the word foreigner is mentioned are starting to become annoying so do some research next time.
