From what i know, Japan in the past wanted to actually join with China. That is why they started a war in the past(fighting against communist party), they attempted to join together with China forcefully so they could contend with the West. Not sure about Korea tho. I could be wrong about this, mind you. But yeah i can agree with your point, i dont believe that Japan or Korea would give up independence to join China, that is pretty nationalistic.
There is nationalism but not in the way this guy describes. It's more love for his country WITHOUT bashing other countries. There's a level of acceptance for other people in this book that you don't see in other webnovels. Read up to chapter 18. You will see just how human the book is.

the author made it seem like Immigrant Japanese people were desperate to make their country come under china. Called them Fusang and what not, and even negatively portrayed the current japanese ruling party who where against coming 'under' china. Very racist

Sorry to ruin your wet dream, but it doesn't matter rather if the Mc is in a parallel or alternative world. You can't ignore the fact that there is nationalism, racism and imperialism in this novel. If you ignore it in a novel, it basically like saying you once ignored bullying in school. Don't call people stupid, as you also made yourself look like a stupid. Once you ignore something, you usually tend ignore it forever until it affect you. Alway a good idea to be open minded and be cautious instead of being a hypocrite.
