Very unique world building, was a little confusing and vague at the start, but now that things are getting going, this seems like a very interesting novel.

This feels to be one of the better novels to come through Trial Reads so far. I’m a bit skeptical that it’ll get chosen due to it not being a system/cultivation/face-slapping novel, but I can always be optimistic about it. The initial impressions are that it is a combination of Lord of Mysteries and multi-verse crossover novel (Terror Infinity/48 hours a day), but not enough has been revealed to judge whether or not that’s correct. My mental imagery has conjured up some Bloodborne vibes, but again, its hard to say how accurate that is. There’s a general sense of mystery regarding the world that’s quite well done. Enough has been shown to pique my interest and hint at a greater mystery regarding the world building, but not so much has been revealed for me to jump to conclusions one way or another. My initial impression is that it takes place in a post-apocalyptic future time where society has degraded technologically to the Industrial Revolution level. There’s a lot of potential here for how things will play out. There appear to be elements of eldritch horror in the Lovecraftian vein, but they’re also balanced with aspects of steampunk and magic. The Lovecraftian elements feel appropriately mysterious and sufficiently dangerous in context. They seem to offer great power with the corresponding amount of consequence, which sets them up to be potentially compelling devil’s bargains in the future. The way steampunk technology has been used thus far and hopefully magic in the future as well lead me to believe that wits and daring will play a larger role in combat than simply might/strength of arms. Aside from the MC, even some minor characters have been shown to be cunning and sprung concealed cards in attempts to turn the tables. Unfortunately, its too soon to say whether or not this will continue, but initial impressions are favorable. The novel summary is a bit vague and I originally thought this was going to be somewhat of a monster evolution novel where the MC evolves from a cluster of cells into increasingly powerful monster forms. He sheds his initial form fairly quickly and “reincarnates” into a human body. From there, he arrives in seemingly Industrial Revolution-era Europe and gets swept up in a scenario-test type world that all youths entering *****hood must undergo where things aren’t as straightforward as they seem. Survivors are selected to become trainees of a order tasked to protect the remnants of humanity from the dangers of the outside world(s). Side characters feel realistically intelligent and take reasonable actions indicative of their backgrounds. There haven’t been any cartoonish villains so far and antagonists have conducted themselves pretty realistically in the context of their backgrounds. All said, the introductory 60 chapters were quite good and enough crumbs have been laid for the story to branch off in a number of potential directions.

Intergalactic conquest with an AI

Rex was just another slave in the corporate machine, a faceless office worker under the shadow of one of the galaxy's powerful megacorps. His life was predictable and dull, an endless cycle of meaningless reports and fluorescent-lit monotony. That was, until that day.... When a new world was discovered on the outskirts of the galaxy, Rex, like countless other low-ranking employees, found himself dragged into a contract clause he’d barely skimmed years ago. The megacorp ordered him and his coworkers to pack their lives into a transport pod and leave for the unexplored planet. Their mission? Establish a colony. Mine resources. Make the company richer. There was no choice, refusing meant ruin. At first, everything seemed manageable. The days were grueling, the nights cold, but progress was steady. The colony was coming to life. Until the excavation team struck something. No one knew what it was at first, a buried hive, a forgotten ecosystem, or something ancient and dangerous. Whatever it was, it unleashed hell. Swarms of enormous, chittering creatures erupted from the ground, their jagged bodies blotting out the sky. The colony fell into chaos. Screams echoed through the air as the bugs tore through everything in their path, walls, machines, and people. Rex barely survived. Bloodied, broken, and pinned beneath the rubble, he should have died there. But in the pitch-black silence of his fading consciousness, a voice spoke to him. Cold. Mechanical. Otherworldly. "Do you wish to live?" When Rex woke, he was no longer the man he’d been. His body was no longer human flesh and bone but something far more alien. His skin shimmered with living metal, his mind infused with the power of Cleo, a mysterious AI from a long-extinct, robotic race known as the Kaelzars. Cleo’s presence pulsed through his thoughts, guiding him and transforming him. He wasn’t just alive. He was reborn. But survival came at a price. Rex was no longer a pawn of the megacorp; he was something more dangerous, something they couldn’t control. As Cleo’s intentions began to reveal themselves, Rex found himself standing on the precipice of war, not just with the bugs but with forces far greater than he could have imagined. This was the beginning of a journey through blood-soaked battlefields and treacherous alliances. Along the way, Rex would encounter allies, brilliant, flawed, and unpredictable, and enemies whose ambitions were as sharp as their blades. These weren’t disposable foes, easily crushed by an overpowered hero. They were cunning, relentless, and human in the most terrifying ways. But then again, in war, who can truly be called a villain?
