Utterly disappointed in this novel. I decided to try this out since I’m a huge fan of Plague Doctor, but this novel is a complete piece of trash. Instead of reading this, you may as well pick up a Chinese elementary school Introduction to Propoganda textbook. So far, the entire novel revolves around other people discriminating against and being racist towards the MC for being Asian-American. The writing is clearly done in a way to portray non-Asians in a terrible light, and make the Chinese readers feel good with some signature face-slapping of the ‘racist Americans’. The entire purpose of this novel is to hate on whites, blacks, and Americans in general. The author was clearly tight on cash to write this loaded piece of anti-western propaganda. This is probably the most racist Chinese novel I’ve ever come across. Playing the victim card while simultaneously being racist. Utter hypocrisy. Read at your own risk.

the novel doesn't even centralize on racism it only occurs for a bit, then reappears for a short period of time as well. if this is the most racist Chinese novel you've ever read then you only haven't read that many chinese novels

Actually, I’ve read >80% of the translated novels on this site, thank you. Just because something is indirectly racist doesn’t mean it’s any better than directly racist. Im curious what novel you think are more racist than this, though. One that I can think of off the top of my head is The Legend of Mythological Genes. Regardless, this novel if definitely in the top tier of racist novels.

Hmm, I’ve read my fair share of novels and there are definitely some more racist ones. Mostly against Americans and Japanese/Korean. Some are also more disguised by changing the name to something along the lines of Sun nation. This novel is up there in terms of racism but it should only play a part in the first arc from my understanding.

I don't get why it's one stars though. Number 1 racism happens and it especially happens when someone is being bullied, I'm not an expert on bullying but i'm sure if the bullied person was of a minority he is going to be racially discriminated. It's not even a race thing, it just is what it is, the same would be the case if the MC was black or Mexican or any other minority. And again this is not a re-occurring theme, it just exposes the harsh reality that yes racism against the Chinese exists and especially in 1998. As for a more racist novel i'd say god and devil world.

You've only read the first chapter, then decided that the whole novel is full of racism? What kind of generalization is that? I bet that as soon as you read the word "racism" you bailed out of the novel, good lord.

The one-star review isn’t solely because of racism, but rather, because there really wasn’t much of a story outside of racism. It seemed to me from what I read that this novel was going to be one of ‘those’ novels, so I didn’t bother to continue reading. Why should I? I didn’t enjoy this novel and I can reasonably presume I won’t enjoy the upcoming chapters, so it makes sense for me not to.

I read into the raws and it was pretty fun to read. The racism was not a predominant theme but the story could get a bit repetitive

This novel ceased to be readable at that moment when the author, for the sake of his attempt to make the protagonist a victim, used his race and the a race of others.. It was in chapter 1, the point is to read such ****? He could write anything to squeeze a tear from the reader and explain the subject of persecution as such. About a difficult fate, about parents, about emotional trauma, but he chose to show what kind of guy this respectable man is small, but proud Asian, but the bad black guys and Caucasians turn him up and even broke his life .. I don’t believe that you can get good starting the story with this

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, 😆, ig if thats ur belief thats fine, but fr, he grew up in the south, im REALLY not surprised he had to deal with racism. I dont agree that the story doesnt get better, but i feel like giving up on it, just because ita racists, makes it seem like u dont wanna deal with it. Like thats the perception people have of america, even now.

It is not a matter of racism itself; the end does not always justify the means. When I read how - "Caucasian guy blond with freckles named Matthew" - insults the main character, I realized that the author, in principle, had not seen a single Caucasian in his whole life. Or he specifically made it so that for him **** what a man looks like (if he is not Asian), so you can insult everyone around except the Chinese. The prospect is not very, given that he himself is a child of immigrants in this novel .. These little things and knowledge of the details, or at least an attempt to find out what you never saw, and not these guessing games that you read and don’t know to cry or they laugh at the stupidity of a person, mainly and distinguish mediocrity from a normal author (not always of course, but in most cases). And this is in the 21st century, when two keys are enough to press and there will be all the information. I don’t argue that you might like this novelty, I might even like it if I don’t pay such attention, but the author will still remind me about his ignorance. (maybe I'm wondering, but I read enough works on this site in including to know that it will be so). I don’t like that. I respect my time and I will not spend it on this. I do not discourage anyone from reading these 60 chapters, but my 2 stars is my personal opinion about this novel, which I have to put. Oh, don’t worry, I said about America because now there are serious problems there, racially motivated.

Uk, u might be right. The author might not have ever seen people like this. Though i do believe that the description might be accurate, its like how the great gatsby was very very descriptive on how the "chad" in the book acted and looked. Not just gatsby, but the other guy who is a stereotypically white rich kid who peaked in highschool. ( i forgot his name) And if u read the book, the description was very stereotypical for a masculine man, but it was accurate in describing him. And ik for sure calling someonw a "ch!nk" for example is. More likely than not done by some Caucasian looking guys, maybe with freekles. Especially back then, but ppl of color did it too. Which is why i feel like saying he has never seen a white person can be inaccurate.

That 's where all the juice lies, he either didn 't see it and he doesn 't care, or he doesn 't know it and he doesn 't care, or he does it on purpose. All three options are not suitable for reading, in my opinion of course. Besides, when you saw successful world literature, with disregard for detail - such is not and will not be, people are not fools. No one will read foolish and basic mistakes and takes defamatory others without any reason. They can be eccentric and explosive, contradictory and dangerous, but will never be mediocre and stupid. It may be a one-sided opinion, but I see the world of literature so much. Even on this thematic and highly specialized site there are good and bad stories, but if the author does not respect the reader and holds him for an idiot it, in my opinion, is immediately visible. In other words, the author of the demagogues is a bad phrase. I have enough of them, but I can tolerate some (for example, "Castle of Black Iron," the main character is still racist and the propaganda of values there works on a full reel, but the story is interesting to read) and there are such as the author of this work simply spit in the face, rub and read further, dear friend - no thank you.

How many chapters in would you say the racism tapers off and it begins to read like a normal webnovel? As long as it doesn’t go on for too long, perhaps I’ll take your word for it and try and keep reading at a later date.

Well this novel is an interesting read. It is nicely translated though I have come across a number of issues that I can only put down to laziness in not rechecking the work. Story begins with the author (studying to be a movie director) being expelled from his University on charges of racism. Amusingly the MC is Chinese and the accuser was African-American. Anyhow the charges are false but of course it’s a case of he said, she said and so he is booted. Whilst wallowing in misery he gains the ability to see movies from the future after being hit in the head by a baby stroller. So that’s is his super power, knowing future movies and being able to plagiarise them. No system, no special powers. The book itself reads well and has a nice story but that is it. I have nothing else to praise it over. The narrative is smooth but there is no grab to it. How many times can the MC direct a movie, produce a movie, invest in XYZ affiliated movie industry? I read up to about chapter 150 and even though I did enjoy reading the story, there was nothing to keep me invested in this. I appreciate the effort the author took to try and keep accuracy in his story however it again it felt like rinse and repeat of previous achievements. I really wanted to be invested in this and did give it a decent go, but it wasn’t to be. The author has decent skills so maybe he could have done this in another manner to keep readers involved. I did note some comments were 4 years old with only 251 chapters released. I suspect this was a trial read that never made the cut back then and WebNovel has pulled it out of the cupboard to see if it can make them some money. Overall it felt good but sadly I had to give up.

Rise To Stardom

Orphaned in the old world after taking care of his irresponsible and sick mother for years on end, Kyle finds his life turned upside down. His already dim world turns even gloomier and coupled with his trauma from losing her, Kyle felt like he had lost his purpose in life. Living day by day, akin to a soulless puppet, he struggled to keep his suicidal thoughts in check, all whilst trying to make ends meet as a cabbie. During those dark times, Kyle slowly begins to find solace in the world of music and movies. Even though it had always been there, it truly became something as a bloodline of sorts for him because, individually, both pieces of media, transported him to another world, one where he could feel happy, if even for a fleeting moment. And, as if the universe wanted even more for him, Kyle met some lovely old people, all of whom treated him as the son they never had, making him feel like he had a family after so long. This eventually, helped him let go of his trauma and turned him into the lovely soul he was always meant to be. But as fate would have it, these same people, wanted for Kyle to pursue his dreams because they saw the potential for greatness in him and the wonderous things he could go on to do, even if Kyle himself was oblivious to it. So, in an effort to make his dreams come true, they ended up gifting him a brand new chance, one that Kyle himself would only go on to realize after his untimely death in a fatal car accident. Now awake in the new world, still orphaned but with a brighter perspective on life, Kyle, armed with a System, another gift from his loved ones in the previous world, decides to take the chance to pursue his dreams of being a star, one that he was unable to pursue in his previous life due to his lack of talent. This is the story of a man who will go on to become the most versatile and renowned superstar all over the world... and it starts, just as he takes his first step into the cutthroat world of fame and fortune by registering for the popular singing reality TV competition, 'Rising Voices'. Known to be a fiercely competitive TV show, Kyle will meet with top contestants from around the world, go up against them, level up and become better, and ultimately, battle with them for the number one spot in the show as a dark horse! --- |AUTHOR NOTE| Just wanted to make it clear, that the singing competition which will be the first arc of the novel, will end around the late twenty-ish or early thirty-ish chapters. After that, you can expect so much more from the story so look forward to it! Also, although the setting is in a parallel world, all the songs, scripts and movies (although I will draw inspiration here and there), will be originals penned by yours truly (-‿◦).
