You missed out on the fact that the author can't keep his story straight. In one chapter, a guy is just the number one in the class and not the school and in the next he is described as one of the best in the school. The mc says he only needs to try and be better than himself and not chase others in one chapter to put down those who care about rankings and in the next chapter he is talking about how the school doesn't have enough talented students to pressure him to improve so he will stagnate if he doesn't have more competition.....
