“I’d still be involved in computers but I’d learn how to do computer graphics and website design instead of application code. That way I could work from home. You know the graphics for games and for graphic novels. I think I’d be good at that. My father didn’t like that idea. He said it was bad enough I was gay, how would it look if I studied art.”

Zach broke off a piece of spring roll, dipped it in duck sauce and fed it to Jason. “You were on a scholarship. They weren’t paying a dime for your education. Why didn’t you study what you wanted to study?”

“Because I had to study something that paid real money so I could help out with Kitty. Ann wasn’t feeling well and it didn’t look like she was going to be able to go back to work. They were counting on me to help. Why does this matter? They’re gone now.”

The waiter brought out their shared beef with broccoli. Zach served it on the two plates, giving Jason more because he needed to put on some weight.
