Web of Shadows: Spider-Gwen Against the Nightling

Somewhere in a universe that's a gazillion miles away, Spider-Gwen and this shady character, Nightling, have been playing their own version of cops and robbers. She slings webs and he... talks to squirrels, I guess? Joke, he controls shadows. Anyway, they've got this whole hero-villain dynamic going on. Could be epic, but then, wham! Feelings happened. Yeah, you read that right. I'm just as surprised as you are(not really I wrote it). Why am I even rewriting this? Oh, right. SnowApathie was like "Oh no, not a ChatGPT summary!" Why do books need summaries anyway? Isn't the mystery part of the fun? Its like someone telling you the end of a movie before you even went to watch it. I hate writing these so much, how does one even write one without spoiling parts of the book? Why are you still even reading this? Shoo, go read the chapters. So, long story short - it's a tale of two super-beings, some feelings, and a whole lot of ridiculousness. Might be worth a read, or not. Up to you! Disclaimer: This is fanfiction. Gwen Stacy and Spider-Woman belong to Marvel Comics. Nightling is an original creation. This work is not affiliated with or endorsed by Marvel Comics. Lunchtime Antics

Exiting the classroom, Luke was greeted by the sight of Max, his best friend, lounging against the hallway wall, a trademark smirk on his face. Max's casual posture and ever-present grin were bright neon signs heralding some mischief, and Luke immediately knew he was in for a hearty ribbing. Max had observed the classroom spectacle, and Luke was certain he was going to extract all the amusement possible from the incident.

Approaching his friend, Luke draped an arm over Max's broad shoulders. He sighed in a resigned yet jovially weary tone, bracing himself for the inevitable teasing. "Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know," he conceded. Then, he performed an exaggerated imitation of Max. "'Luke, if you hadn't ditched me like that, you wouldn't have ended up with so much work. What a lousy friend you are.'" Each word was articulated with playful exaggeration, perfectly mimicking Max's deep voice and mannerisms.

Unable to withstand the mockery, Max burst into laughter, the sound echoing through the hallway and bouncing off the locker-lined walls. His arm found its way around Luke's shoulder, and he leaned on his friend for support, both of them propped against the wall in a makeshift two-man lean-to.

When Max had controlled his laughter, he shook his head, a wide grin still splitting his face. "I'm sorry, man, it's just...you should have seen your face when you were assigned your part." He started laughing again, remembering the scene. "I swear I thought you were about to burst into tears, dude. Your lips were shaking!"

Luke chuckled at Max's overblown description, his eyes sparkling with humor. He gave Max a light shove, his voice dripping with disbelief.

"Shaking? Seriously, Max? You've known me for years, when have you ever seen me about to cry? Your theatrics could rival Broadway."

Once Max recovered from his fit of laughter, he guided them towards the cafeteria. The two friends moved in perfect sync, their long-established camaraderie evident in their shared laughter and comfortable silence. Their conversation continued effortlessly as they navigated the bustling hallways, the clatter of lockers and chatter of other students serving as a familiar background score.

"So, seriously Luke, how are you going to handle this 'environmental science' thing?" Max nudged him teasingly. "I mean, when was the last time you got your hands dirty?"

Deciding to play along, Luke rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "Well, Max, there's a first time for everything, right? Besides, how hard can it be to pick up a few leaves and pebbles?"

Max let out a hearty laugh, shaking his head in amusement. "Luke, it's environmental science, not a nature walk. Don't underestimate Gwen; she's a force of nature."

"A force of nature, huh?" Luke pondered, one eyebrow arched at the thought of the challenge. "Well, as long as she doesn't morph into a tornado or something. I wouldn't survive that."

Max roared with laughter at the comment, throwing his head back in delight. "Trust me, Luke, you've weathered worse storms."

The friends navigated the labyrinthine corridors until they reached the bustling cafeteria. After joining the queue and fetching their lunch, they headed towards their usual table, a corner spot offering a view of the entire room.

"And then," Max narrated, his eyes twinkling with mischief as he recounted the story to their friends, "she laid down the law! She told him she'd willingly take an F just to teach him a lesson!" He mimicked Gwen's stern tone, making it sound even more outrageous and ridiculous than it had been.

Their friends around the table burst out laughing, some wiping faux tears from their eyes. Luke groaned in response, slouching down further in his seat. His face was a blend of faux annoyance and amusement. Despite his act, he found himself joining in the laughter. It was one of those awkward, yet hilarious, moments that, while mildly embarrassing in the present, would undoubtedly morph into a memorable story in the future.

Theirs was a loud group, and their boisterous laughter carried across the cafeteria. Gwen and Olivia, two classmates who had also come to grab their lunch, sat at a nearby table. They overheard Max's story and their interest was piqued.

"So, you and Luke, huh?" Olivia teased Gwen, her eyes sparkling with amusement as she leaned in to hear her friend's side of the story. "How did you get stuck with him of all people?"

Gwen responded with a dramatic sigh. "It's a sad story, really," she began, pressing a hand to her chest. "I was minding my own business when suddenly, my peaceful existence was disrupted."

Olivia's laughter rang out at Gwen's theatrics, her amusement sparkling in her eyes. "Oh, come on, Gwen. It can't be that bad," she reasoned, her smile broad and teasing.

Gwen feigned a mournful frown, her voice raised just loud enough for Luke and his friends to hear. "It's terrible, Olivia! He practically hijacked my workstation and then had the audacity to assume we were partners!" She gestured dramatically in the direction of Luke's table for emphasis.

No sooner had the words left her mouth than a burst of laughter erupted from Luke's direction. Max, always ready to keep the fun rolling, was laughing so hard he had to clutch his stomach. His eyes glittered with delight at Gwen's exaggerated tale of woe. The others at the table, including Luke, were drawn into the mirth, their amusement filling the cafeteria with lively echoes of laughter.

Amidst the hubbub, Olivia, with a teasing glint in her eyes, raised her voice to address Max across the cafeteria. "Why is it so funny that your bestie is messing with my bestie, Max?"

Max, now finally recovered from his bout of laughter, looked back at Olivia. His grin stretched even wider as he shrugged nonchalantly. "Isn't it always amusing when an immovable object meets an unstoppable force, Olivia?"

The cafeteria broke into a new wave of laughter at Max's clever reply. Even Luke, lifting his soda, couldn't help but chuckle, his eyes meeting Gwen's in shared amusement across the room.

Unfazed, Olivia retorted with a sly smirk. "Oh, so Gwen's the immovable object. That would make Luke the unstoppable force, huh? Someone might need to revisit their physics lessons!"

Olivia's clever comeback had the Luke's table erupting in laughter yet again. His friends pounding on the table, hooting at her well-delivered burn. Even Luke, the butt of the joke, chuckled good-naturedly, lifting his soda in a mock toast to Olivia.

The playful banter continued with their friend Zach chiming in. "Hey, Olivia, remember when you almost did a faceplant in the cafeteria, and Luke — bless his strong heart — caught you mid-air? Now, wasn't that an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object in real-time?"

This comment incited a fresh wave of laughter. Olivia, surprised by the unexpected throwback, reacted with wide-eyed surprise before bursting into giggles. She playfully feigned offense, "Zach, are you implying that I'm heavy?"

Luke and Max's friends exploded into even louder laughter, reaching that point where everything, absolutely everything, became hilariously funny for no apparent reason. The cafeteria was filled with the echoes of their infectious giggles as they found themselves in a state of uncontrollable amusement, utterly unable to contain their mirth at Olivia's mock outrage. Even Gwen couldn't help but join in, teasing, "Yeah, Zach, implying Olivia is heavy would mean Luke is actually strong."

Luke took it all in stride, countering with a smirk, "Remember the summer camp when I single-handedly moved that fallen tree branch off the path?"

The memory of a younger, lankier Luke struggling under the weight of the tree branch had everyone continue to laugh. The banter continued until Luke finally got up from his table and sauntered over to Gwen and Olivia's table.

"We should swap snaps," Luke suggested nonchalantly, taking out his phone. "That way, we can figure out when to make our field trip to Central Park for this project."

Olivia's gasp practically reverberated off the cafeteria walls. "Hold up," she screeched, her voice piercing the hubbub, "Luke, are you asking Gwen out on a date?!"

Laughter rippled through Luke's table, his friends barely containing their mirth at Olivia's outrageous interpretation.

Max, of course, seized the moment. "Well, well, well," he drawled, a theatrical gasp following his words, "Luke, is this your slick way of asking Gwen out? In front of the entire school, no less! I never pegged you for the daring type!" His words were punctuated by hoots and cheers, his antics prompting a few friends to lightly punch him in the shoulder.

Luke rolled his eyes so hard it looked as though they might pop out of their sockets. "Really, guys?" he moaned, a mixture of amusement and exasperation painting his face. "We're just planning our project trip to Central Park. This is hardly The Bachelor." His words only prompted another wave of laughter to roll through the two tables, cementing the memory of this moment in the minds of everyone present.

Pulling out her phone, Gwen revealed a charming phone case that perfectly matched her vibrant personality. It was a galaxy-themed design, a swirl of purples, blues, and pinks, littered with tiny silver stars that glimmered under the cafeteria's fluorescent lights. A smile played on her lips as she unlocked the device and pulled up Snapchat.

"My username is StarryEyedWanderer," she announced, her voice carrying a hint of amusement.

Luke quickly tapped in her username and sent a friend request. Then, without missing a beat, he slung an arm around Gwen, drawing her into a half-side hug. Surprised, she turned slightly towards him, just as he switched his phone to selfie mode.

With a swift movement, Luke pressed the shutter button, the screen flashing as it immortalized the candid moment in a single snapshot. The photo was a burst of colors and expressions, a beautiful mix of laughter and camaraderie. Max and his friends sat in the background, their grinning faces squeezed together as they made peace signs. Olivia was a picture of radiant charm, her heart sign and sparkling smile stealing a fair share of the photo's attention.

In the center of the frame was Luke himself, his arm thrown casually around Gwen, his signature playful smirk on his face. However, the real scene-stealer was Gwen. Taken aback by the surprise selfie, her face was a comical mix of shock and amusement, her eyebrows raised in surprise and lips slightly parted in the middle of a word.

Without missing a beat, Luke sent the snap to Gwen. As the image disappeared from his screen, he chuckled at the captured moment of laughter and surprise. However, Gwen was not as amused.

"Luke!" she exclaimed, gently shoving him off her. "You could've warned me!"

With an insouciant shrug of his shoulders, Luke grinned, "C'mon Gwen, it's all in good fun. Spontaneity is the spice of life, after all."

"Is that so?" Gwen teased, her eyebrows raised in a playful challenge, "So, should I expect more of these surprise...snap attacks in the future?"

"Only time will tell," Luke replied, his tone brimming with mirth.

Laughing, they finally got down to discussing their Central Park visit. They quickly settled on a date that worked for both of them. Luke made a mental note to save the date, knowing well that his knack for forgetting things could land him in trouble.

As they wrapped up their conversation, the lunch period was coming to an end. The chatter in the cafeteria gradually faded as students started to collect their trays and prepare for their next classes. It was time to head back to the realities of school life, but the lively lunch hour had surely added a spark to their day, providing enough fodder for amusing memories in the days to come.
